For a young adult book to take on such hard topics but in a lighthearted yet honest way, while still keeping it imaginative is such a hard thing to find these days. Riordan has always done a beautiful job at giving us stories that are captivating in both the story building and the character developments they give. This book (even as a standalone) in my opinion deserves as much praise as its Percy Jackson series counterpart. The work that went into the research and development of this story is such and amazing part too and very evident in many ways.

My 10 y/o and I love reading Rick Riordan's books out loud, so we were looking forward to this series. The characters are fun and interesting, but neither of us liked the amount of guns, and kids with guns, at the school. Clearly it's a fantasy school and a dangerous one, but the gun violence feels a lot different than the fantasy violence of the Percy Jackson books. We want to read these books because they are fantasy, but kids casually walking around with AK-47s in school settings and threatening to shoot other kids with SIG Sauers isn't fantasy, it's scary. Working to avoid thinking about school shootings while reading a Riordan series wasn't what we expected.

We talked about how intense the guns seemed in the opening chapters of the book and decided to give it a few more chapters. While we talk about gun violence as I'm sure every parent must, we really don't want to have to talk about it while we read before bed. We decided to put it aside as the guns became more guns, and then more guns!

This is probably for an older group, and a reader that som how isn't tired of reading about kids with guns at school.

What if 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea wasn’t fiction and Captain Nemo’s tech was so advanced we wouldn’t understand it today?

I didn’t really get the violent ending of the original story, so I appreciated this reimagining of the story that made more sense to me. The story talks a lot about processing grief through the tragedies the main character faces. Also touches on reconciling with a family member you don’t trust anymore.
