This was the 2005 Hugo Winner for best Novella.

This book starts with the investigation of a cow fried to a Crispy Critter, and ends with the attempted bureaucratic overthrow of The Laundry. There was a lot of sciencey talk between these two events. Really and truly, these short stories of The Laundry are a gem!

Computer hackers fighting monsters using retro tech & advanced math all while fending off the horrors of government bureaucracy -- what’s not to like?

This is more of a short story that comes right after The Atrocity Archives. Thankfully it doesn't suffer from the same pacing issues that I faced with the first book, which might be due to the fact that the whole thing is around 60 pages long. Nevertheless, the plot, involving gorgon-esque security cameras and a short-fused awesome detective (that I'm hoping we'll get to see again), is top notch and resolved itself in an immensely satisfying way.

Pretty good but a little repetitive at times

Una pequeña historia que continuaba a The Atrocity... y que tiene menos primigenios o masterplanes nazis pero más burocracia y proyectos gubernamentales. Muy entretenido.

This is a great addition to this series. It made me cringe and laugh, an odd combo maybe but it worked. I love how quickly the main character thinks on his feet, but still messes up from time to time. And he still has to fill out his timecard and deal with bureaucracy. All while fighting bad guys with evil Gorgon rays.....

So far Stross is 3 for 3 with me. I love the mix of the Cthulhu mythos, with sci-fi and comedy. The man's a genius AND he knows how to write a story.
