After having read J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood books, this is a fresh and beautiful scene. I very much enjoyed this book and will continue the series.

3.5 stars... It was good enough to continue the series, but definitely not as good as the Brotherhood series. This one was a bit tame compared to her other books.

Overall pretty lackluster, wishy washy characters and predictable storylines. And with all the shit that Lane pulled, it pissed me off that he gets on his moral high horse over abortion. Ugh annoying

I was going to DNF this but pushed through.
The plot was pretty frustrating and I couldn't connect with the characters

Why 3 stars? Well this book had all the makings of being a great saga. It was building you up, adding sub-plots, building on the current theme & introducing new twists. All these threads weaving into something great and then it just darn snuffed out like a week candle flame - poof. The ending was so jarring and disconnected I had to check if there was a part two I was unaware of.

The ending was also, well, cheesy, nay corny. We were lead through some real life stuff & then it was almost like Ward had read Gone with the Wind too many times and decided her not-saga would have a sappy happy ending. Actually, a selfish happy ending - as all the other characters you care about are still stuck in their personal hell while the two characters you actually don’t care much for ride off into their Southern sunset.

Ye Gods - that was disappointing.

I can't give this one too many stars cause sheesh was it junk but I had a good enough time listening to it. It reminded me of babysitting on Friday night and watching Dallas and Dynasty back in the day. Very, very soap opera-y. I also was a little annoyed at how much of a non-ending the ending was....I guess book 2 in this series is on the way.

It was kind of terrible. The writing was great and I'm a J.R. Ward fan but the story and characters were pretty bad. Something bad happened in nearly every chapter, which didn't keep things exciting but slowed the actual story down. I don't see myself reading another book in this series.

The Bradford family is Rich with a capital R! They have made their money by making bourbon - and they are good at it. The family estate, Easterly, is gorgeous, but the people who live inside are all damaged. Lane, the second son, has been living in New York for the past two years, basically crashing on a friend's couch, to escape the woman he was forced into marrying. Meanwhile, head gardener of the estate, Lizzie King, has been nursing the heart that was broken by Lane. Lane receives a message that his mother is dying, and races back to Easterly. His biological mother has barely left her bedroom for the past three years, pretty much in a drug induced haze. The woman who raised him, Miss Aurora, is very happy to see Lane home, especially after her recent trip to hospital. On his first day home, Lane discovers the body of the financial controller, (her death looks like suicide) in her office. He can't stay away from Lizzie, nor she from him, so they work together to find out what has been going on in the years that Lane has been away. There is Lane's wife, Chantal, his father, William and his older brother Edward - all of whom are nursing grudges. This is the first book in a three book saga and I'm looking forward to reading more.
