This was a sad volume which I won't go into because of spoilers, but one thing I want to briefly discuss is Toguro's motivations. Toguro is honestly one of my favorite anime villains because he's a multifaceted individual with a solid, reasonable motivation for his actions. He doesn't want to fight time and possibly lose his strength to old age, so he decided to wish for an ageless, powerful body that is nearly unstoppable. It's such a simple motivation, but very human considering that aging is something that people often struggle with accepting, and seeing how this fear has warped Toguro is painful yet understandable. Despite adopting a demonic mindset and lust for power, Toguro is still human in his fears and desires.

But that's enough about that, I'm finally approaching the final battle of the tournament! This is a long arc, but I'm still pumped and ready to see it to the end!

  1. We get some of those unexpected moments Togashi does so well. Fights that are abruptly ended because (ex.) Kuwabara is teleported back to the other arena thereby losing by being out of bounds...this happens twice.
  2. The furby is called Pu?
  3. The guys from the previous fight are friends with us now?
  4. Sometimes you can brute strength it.
  5. That one guy with the long hair and tails on Toguro's team looks too cool for school. (aka Karasu)
  6. Being old...is a problem for some people?
  7. Toguro and Genkai were teammates.
  8. Bro just wants to fight someone worthy of his 100% power.
  9. RIP Genkai

I knew this was coming, but I still wasn’t prepared for it. Genkai was always so cool and powerful, and I desperately want to cosplay as her one day. It’s still rare to see older women in manga with this much strength and knowledge, as well as completely accepting of her age, all of which is in direct contrast with toguro (younger), who is so terrified of aging and dying that he sold his soul to preserve himself.

Actually, I almost forgot to mention that this volume was all Genkai, being such a brilliant fighter, even after giving Yusuke (most, or almost all of) her power. Ugh, I love her.

And we've hit the chapters that always made me cry as a teen.

They have the same effect on me as an adult, no surprise
