On Solid Ground was my first M/M romance and Melissa Collins has me hooked! Dax comes home from war heart broken with some serious PTSD while Beck is dealing with his own traumatic past and family drama. When you add in an adorable niece, a service dog, and some steamy sex you get a great story. The couple lingered with me and now I'm looking forward to the sequel.

There just seemed to be imbalance throughout the book. A lot of time was devoted to Dax and his issues, but less time toward Beck's horrendous background. The death of Dax's boyfriend was presented as a major deal but the death of Beck's sister was glossed over at the end. And the development of their relationship seemed to take second place to each MC's personal issues and to Beck's niece Violet. And the relationship just seesawed up and down from misunderstanding to misunderstanding.

This book almost made me cry

Oh this book pulls on the heartstrings until you can't help but tear up.
I wasn't sure what I was going to get when I started reading it but what I did get was a beautiful love story of two men brought together by chance and with all kinds of trauma to deal with but never enough to break them.
The secondary characters are also well drawn and all bring the Long Beach setting to life perfectly.
While there is lots of trauma, ultimately what is being told is a story of love, of taking chances and living the life you've been given to the best of your ability.
Dax and Beck are beautifully flawed men and I fell for them both.

I'm not sure if I wasn't in the right headspace or if I was too distracted while reading, but I didn't really like this. The ending was also really abrupt.

Good effort

3.5 stars
Was a good effort. I liked the portrayal of Dax's PTSD, I thought it was handled well, I just didn't feel the connection between the two MCs. They came across like best friends not lovers. The miscommunications were numerous and at times frustrating. They both had so much going on in their lives that they just didn't talk or listen to each other.

I liked it. It's your standard hurt-comfort affair but it was enjoyable and characterizations of the main characters were solid. Unfortunately, the supporting cast wasn't as fully fleshed out as they could have been. Apart from Dax and Beck's near instant connection, the story felt a little hollow to me. There were also some minor plot holes and details that were overlooked but they weren't significant enough to detract from the story. Although it was determinedly angsty, it didn't necessarily pack the emotional wallop I was expecting. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad.

Really good

This is a good story. But it was very insta-lovey and moved very fast. Especially considering that one of the men is fresh from war, has PTSD, and firmly in the closet with only one person knowing about his sexuality. I don't even think the whole book takes place over a year, including the epilogue that takes place six months after the main story. A lot of very serious things happen in a very short amount of time, and there are some very hardcore psychological things that are lightly touched on, and then not really ever truly dealt with. Which overall just didn't work well for me.
