a flawed main character hates to see me coming but i wasn't expecting the twist and the ending kind of made up for it. cringe for penn mention. but acknowledgements were cool debut novel written during pandemic

I wanted to like this book.
So badly that I could taste it.
unfortunately my interest in this book died after I figured out that and I figured out the killer pretty dang quick.
I know I read a lot of thrillers but I didn't expect to figure it out that fast.
No hate to the author whatsoever.
But no one burned in this book (deceiving title) so ig i can put my fire extinguisher away...
I received a complementary ARC of this book via NetGalley. All thoughts are my own.

how many times is this girl going to trip in the woods
the most interesting character has to be fiona, the dead sister. addi is not a very interesting character, aside from her need to avenge her sisters death and her overbearing personality on her brother. the final reveal… was anticlimactic. not sure what it is with certain types of thrillers, but the goofy scooby doo-esque plan reveal by the killer is so contrived and feels like the author couldn’t figure out the motive by themselves, which i guess you couldn’t. there wasn’t really a big hint towards the killers true motives until they had to explain their entire reasoning, and it’s so unsatisfying :/. idgaf about seth’s and addi’s relationship. i would’ve respected the author way more if she full sent it and went with very taboo topics, the type that would truly blur the morality of the good characters and make the bad characters even more evil, but it was all very lukewarm.
you’re telling me kendall did all of this because of her stupid trust fund???? kendall comparing her situation to rich men staying in power…. please was this supposed to be like a girl boss moment in kendall’s mind? i think she was cunning enough to pull it off, but the motive could’ve been so much more interesting. i would’ve been so much more impressed she killed fiona because of her affair with her father out of some twisted incestual jealousy. but this type of character psychology is probably harder to develop, something the author couldn’t or didn’t want to do. clearly this is a messed up rich family, but it’s not as messed up as i thought it would be. the blurb is a summary of the the entire story, and the story doesn’t lend anymore juicier once you get into it.
