I think if I was the YA audience this was intended for, I would have enjoyed it more. As it is, the writing is good, but the pace is way too slow. While the heroine is interesting, she doesn't act 16 and quite frankly, a bunch of boys who seem to be over 18 hitting on 16 year olds is a bit icky for me. Sorry. But I do like the friendships between girls in this novel. It is really well done that bit.
Witches. Vampires. New Orleans. Throw in the aftermath of a big hurricane and you'd think this would be one big cliche. But it's not. I enjoyed this book more than I expected as it wasn't quite what I was expecting.
The Casquette Girls is a hauntingly beautiful story that is deeply rooted in rich New Orleans culture. There’s also the history of magic and vampires present throughout the story. I fell in love with this world and the characters.
As I started this book, I noticed it was a bit slow going. I stopped a few times because it was slow. I kept waiting for more to happen. There is quite a bit of backstory and building of the worlds. Once I hit part two though, I was like ooooh here we go! I see what you did Miss Arden!
I finished the book and kind of sat there like, wow. Mind blown. I see a trip to New Orleans in my future.
I got to meet Alys Arden at Hallowread two years ago. Her books caught my eye. She was super nice and had really cool Tarot Cards as swag! Yes I am just reading them. I’m glad I finally did!! I am hooked and Miss Arden has a new fan. If you’re a fan of magic and paranormal, this book and series is for YOU! I give this 5 stars!

So in love with this book!! I love the whole New Orleans voodoo vibe along with the vampires! It definitely had me creeped out at times. I couldn't stop reading! I'm definitely excited to read the next book! I need more Adele and Issac and Dee!!
This was too damn long.
I got this book and its sequel from a cool vampire shop when I went to New Orleans last summer. I'm glad I didn't get the third and fourth, because I will not be continuing this series.
Again, because I feel like I have to emphasize, this book is too damn long. Like, 200+ pages of fat should have been cut. Although a bit of supernatural elements were sprinkled in the first hundred pages, it wasn't til the 200 some page mark did shit finally begin to go down, and that was still drawn out for another 200+ pages.
Additionally, the YA tropes I absolutely hate shine their unbearable asses here, like the good boy/bad boy love triangle with the main female protagonist and said love interest being over 300+ years old compared to the 16 year old protagonist (I was gagging and begging for it to end whenever they interacted). And the rules of this supernatural world wasn't clearly defined, like the MC suddenly got powers with no explanation at the beginning and was able to cast spells with no proper training by the end. My suspension of disbelief has its limits.
Overall, this was an extremely tedious and painful read for me. I'm really not starting off the year with a lot of good reads, am I?

This book was enjoyable, but it was really long! like Game of Thrones long! The plot was predictable, and the "Everthing-in-New-Orleans-Is-Just-So-Different-You-Can't-Possibly-Understand" attitude was a bit tired. Overall the book was a nice, fluffy, read. But it could have been cut down by quite a bit.

Phenomenal! One of my favorites of the year...can't wait for the second!

I'm glad I finally gave this book a shot--it's been sitting on my shelf for nearly 3 years after I got a free copy at a conference. It was pretty captivating and fun to read. There will a few cringey "So. Random." comments that dated the dialogue, and every now and then the teenagers would be eye-rolling-ly teenagery in a way that took me out of the story, but overall worth the read. I don't know if I'm ready to jump into continuing the series but I probably will someday. It was absolutely a love letter to New Orleans and captured the heart of the city and the devastation a storm can bring.
I feel like a treasure hunter, I went searching through the maze of Goodreads genres and found TCG. No recommendations just me and a back cover blurb. I loved this book and judged it unfairly. I thought it was great but was capitalizing on current trends in the YA fantasy universe. I was wrong. So wrong. While I still loved it it wasn't until I went to NOLA recently. I felt like I walked into the pages of this book! So rich were the descriptions I wanted nothing more than to turn a corner and run into a flesh and blood doppelgänger of the characters. On a tour past St Ursulines, I discovered that TCG pulls from a delicious collective of folklore that is unique only to New Orleans. I am hooked and enchanted. Stunning capture of a post storm world with a not so ancient mythology unearthed and offered to the storytelling gods.
