One of my favorites of the year. Loved the local color included within the narrative.

the YA novel of my dreams! the prose is addictive, the pace is breakneck, the characters and storytelling are fascinating. can't wait to read the next two, and i want to move to New Orleans.

I read this book for my book club's August BOTM and i definitely did enjoy it.
As a Louisiana native, I found the material to be incredibly engaging and immersive especially when I could mentally track beat for beat where I was in New Orleans. The intricately detailed setting and descriptions made me feel like I was right there living in the aftermath of "The Storm" or as we all know it to be as Hurricane Katrina. It reminded me of a time of hearing all the stories of the pain, suffering and the amount of people we lost and the many families that were displaced due to the damage. The paranormal is also a large portion of New Orleans lore and myths and I'm extremely happy with the involvement of the paranormal here in all it's aspects. One of my favorite parts of this story are the jumps between the past to the 1700s and back to the present day. My other favorite part is the use of the tale of The Casket Girls, an old legend amongst the locals. This story was fun, witty, heartwarming, and a solid reminder of the strength of the New Orleans community. It's also a lovely spin on New Orleans folklore and our love and respect for most things that go bump in the night, especially vampires.
As it was the first in a 5 book series I look forward to not only rereading this one but reading the next four. As far as it goes, I will be recommending this book to friends and family of mine.

This was great fun, can't wait to read the sequel.

I rate this book a three only because it took the first 200 pages to get the ball rolling. I loved the New Orleans setting and the mix of witches and vampires.
YA isn’t my cup of tea ☕️. I expected more excitement more scandals or betrayals. The book would have been so much better if it wasn’t so long. To many ideas in one book. It’s like the author had An idea that lead to another idea that lead to another which lead to more and more Explanations. My wires got crossed at one point and I was all messed up and confused.
I’m sorry to say I will more then likely not keep reading the series.

adventurous medium-paced

This book was a little difficult to get in to as the beginning seemed pretty slow paced. After the first 100 pages or so it picked up a bit. The plot of the story is very interesting, using parts of actual New Orleans history mixed with fiction. There isn't a ton of character development, we mostly learn about the MC Adele and part of her family history, which ends up being pretty crucial. I enjoyed the parts of the book where Adele is translating her great-great-great and so on grandmother's diary, we get to read what has happening to her in that time period and how it relates to what Adele is going through in modern day. All in all I enjoyed reading it and am looking forward to finding out what happens in the next as this leaves you wanting to know more!

As someone that actually lives in New Orleans, I was excited for this to be based on our lore and history. However it felt like it was written by a tourist who has lived visited a few times and thinks that they know our culture and then did the quickest google search ever, yet did no actual research. My eyes where starting to hurt with how much I was rolling them at the amount of shit wrong or out of context.
