AHHH! This was right. up. my alley! I mean, magic and monsters and alternate words and villains and mystery. Yes yes yes!

To be quite honest, I wasn’t feeling very optimistic during the first few chapters, but then things turned out very well. So well that when I had about ten chapters left, I went searching for a kindle version or hardback copy of the sequel but couldn’t find one ):

It’s a book a normal-paced reader could easily finish in one sitting; super exciting and fast-paced. Lovable and funny characters, and the world was really well thought of.

I’m trying to read more middle grade books so I’d have a collection of books ready for my little one when she’s older, and this is DEFINITELY going on top of the list.

(4.5). I listened to this on Audible and I LOVED it so very much - I definitely think I’m learning to love middle grade fantasy. And the narrator of this was incredible and I’m definitely keen to listen to other books she’s read.

I have a very divided opinion on this book. The beginning was slow, which I'm never a fan of, and I don't think works in a middle grade. 50 pages in and nothing had really happened yet and I wasn't enjoying it. The second half of the book was far better. The world building was rich and you really feel like you're in this world with Emily.

For the most part I liked the writing style, but I felt it was trying too hard at times to be 'youthful' and it just didn't work given it wasn't written in first person. I could have understood the word choices more if it had been.

Then there's the playing up to Irish stereotypes

Our first nightly family book of the quarantine is done! This is just such a super fun book with a lot of great writing. If you're doing it as a read aloud, it's even more fun because lots of great accents and voices and monsters to be acted out. The writing flows very easily and it's great for everyone.

“Little things she’d thought were glass she now could see were diamonds.” P 195

This book kind of reminded me of Crooked Sixpence by Jennifer Bell. My son compared it to Harry Potter with her secret abilities, she was visited by mysterious people at her home, and magic.

This story creates another world existing in London, hidden within a secret entrance, only reachable in the midnight hour. Within this world, magic exists, that was separated from the world we know it, based on the London Tower clock chimes. In this world, there everyone has magical abilities - from people who change into animals, to flying bicycles and witches, to the magic night post. Emily learns about her family secrets and works to free her parents.

I enjoyed this quick, spooky story.

After a mysterious letter is delivered and both her parents go missing Emily takes it upon herself, along with her hedgehog companion, to go after them. She stumbles upon a secret parallel world that's stuck in time called The Midnight Hour that her parents are somehow mindbogglingly connected to it.

This is an imaginative, curious, and unique story that I thoroughly enjoyed. I loved learning about the magic and everything with The Midnight Hour. Emily, her mom, and Hoggins- the hedgehog- all had hilarious personalities that constantly had me grinning. I liked getting to know Tarkus as well he was a fun character to meet. This was an exciting unpredictable adventure that I was happy to be a part of. The villain in this story was so compelling and noteworthy (you see what I did there).  The ending was both enthralling and ominous and I'm very intrigued to see what happens in the next book. I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.

Happy Reading my Friends.

Devoured this book in one sitting. I loved the dual settings and action filled plot. However I loved the cheeky, gritty, brave character Emily, the most! Her sassy comebacks and impulsive replies were humorous and delightful. Hoggins, her hedgepig sidekick, was quite a cute character as well. A fun read and I can’t wait for more in this series! Grades 4 and up.
