A truly enjoyable book with a concept that I have never read before - secret magical London stuck in time. Rich imagery, entertaining characters that are dynamic, and a promising start to a new series!

Emily tipikus tizenkét éves, aki szerint a szülei tők égők. Az anyja fura művészlélek, aki szemétből alkot, úgyhogy persze, sokan csúfolják miatta így a kislány nagy szája aztán rendesen bajba keveri őt mind az iskolában, mind otthon. Ráadásul az apja is totál unalmas munkát végez (postás!), s még ráadásul szobafogságra is ítélik, mert szemtelenkedett. Aztán egyszer csak eltűnik az anyukája, majd az apukája is és Emily magára marad, úgyhogy nincs más választása, mint megkeresni a szüleit, mert azért nagyon hiányoznak neki. S kiderül, bizony nagyon el volt tévelyedve azt illetően, hogy kicsoda is az anyja, meg az apja. Ugyanis nemcsak hogy különös lények bukkannak fel Londonban és üldözni kezdik, ő maga is hozzájut egy kulcshoz, s amikor éjfélt üt a Big Ben órája átjut egy másik világba. Ami megrekedt a viktoriánus Londonban, de nem csak hogy nincs telefon, autó és rossz szemmel nézik, hogy egy lány nadrágot visel, hanem ráadásul még tele van mágiával és mágikus lényekkel. Emily apja nem csak akármilyen postás volt, hanem az Éjféli posta egyik igen fontos ágazatában dolgozott az édesanyjának pedig rendkívül komoly szerepe volt abban, hogy az Éji Népségnek sikerült megmaradnia, amikor a való világból kezdett eltűnni a mágia. Csakhogy a status quo fenntartása nem mindenkinek áll érdekében, s bizony a rend megbontására készülődnek titokzatos erők, akiknek igencsak szüksége lenne Emily családjára. Szóval nem kisebb feladat áll a kislány előtt, mint hogy megmenteni a szüleit és az összes létező világot…
A szerzők nagyon jó kis világot alkottak, elkalauzolnak bennünket a Viktoriánus Londonba, ahol még mindig tombol a mágia és varázslatos lényekkel vannak teli az utcák. Rengeteg különlegességgel találkozik Emily (és az olvasó), s mindezek egyáltalán nem nyomasztják a cselekményt, hanem kifejezetten jó tempóban vannak adagolva. Sőt fokozatosan lesznek egyre nagyobbak a veszélyek és ahogy halad a történet egyre több akció lesz, minden kicsit izgalmasabb az előzőnél. Nagyon élveztem olvasni és a végére tényleg faltam a sorokat, hogy megtudjam, hogyan sikerül megállítani a főgonoszt és csatlósait. Úgyhogy ja, valahol megkaptam az MG Sosehol érzést.
Emily beleillik a portál fantasy hősnők sorába (Alice, Dorothy, Lucy vagy éppen Szeptember mellé), talpraesett és nagyszájú. Igazán kiváló karakter, aki nem hibátlan, néha igencsak rossz döntéseket hoz, sőt vannak gyenge pontjai és , nem csak a nagy szája

I want so badly to give this book a 4 star rating, but I physically cannot bring myself to do it.
While I absolutely loved the environment, the setting, and the atmosphere, the main character was just unbearable (but more on that later). The idea of a Victorian London world living right alongside our world is honestly so cool. I was drawn to it immediately, and the author did a really good job at showing a small taste of the world while still making it seem like there was so much more to discover about it. It was the perfect atmosphere for a fall read.
However, I found the main character quite irritating. She was incredibly rude to people she has just met, and to all of the people who tried to help her throughout the story. Her overuse of the words "flippin" and "frick" were the perfect example of what an 11/12 year old would say in 2019, but it was far to over the top for me, and I just found the character irksome.
Overall, the only character I really enjoyed was The Hog (a hedgepig the character carried around in her pocket). However the atmosphere and setting makes me want to re-read this book every fall season.

The midnight hour is a time and place where all the magic has been contained and the magical creatures and monsters can live safely, away from normal people. But this pne place isn't enough for some of them, who want the daytime realm for their own too.
Emily has always thought she was too normal, if anything. Apart from having a totally bonkers, embarrassing mum, her Dad more than makes up for it by being the most boring person in the universe. However, Emily is very wrong! Her parents have been keeping some huge secrets from her and when they both go missing, she finds out about this amazing other world.
This book is written with such a wonderful sense of humour, I loved Emily and the Gob, which seems to have a life of its own.

Clopotele de fără un sfert o treziră pe Emily în toiul nopții. Melodia lor pluti dinspre Big Ben peste fluviu, către cartierul Lambeth, și intră la ea în cameră pe geamul deschis.
Felinarele de pe stradă dădeau dormitorului o vagă tentă portocalie. Pe peretele de deasupra patului, trei iepuri negri se fugăreau într-un cerc nesfârșit, sclipind stins în lumină. Și perna, și Feesh, crocodilul ei de pluș, erau umede de lacrimi. Emily se ridică în capul oaselor și gemu văzând cifrele roșii de pe ecranul deșteptătorului. Era douăsprezece fără un sfert – șapte ore de când fusese trimisă pentru totdeauna la culcare –, și se simțea lihnită de foame.
Se trânti la loc pe pernă și-și înfipse nasul în bietul Feesh cel fleșcăit (pe care, bineînțeles, îl ținea mai mult în glumă și clar nu-l strângea la piept în fiecare seară). Cum de se-ntâmplase din nou? Cum? Ca de obicei, problema fusese mama ei – nesuferita ei de mamă. Avea ceva atât de enervant, încât Emily se trezea că se transformă într-un fitil și explodează într-o furie necontrolată. Focurile de artificii erau nimic pe lângă ea. Poc bang buf, o ceartă-monstru, și zbang! nu mai ieși din casă. Absolut nedrept. Iar de data asta chiar avusese un motiv întemeiat. Billy Jenkins o văzuse ajutând-o pe mama ei să scoată ceva dintr-o pubelă și spusese tuturor la școală că Emily trăiește într-un tomberon. Ea se chircise atât de tare, încât, medical vorbind, avea șanse să nu se mai îndrepte niciodată de spate, și asta numai din cauza mamei.
Potrivit celei mai recente plângeri depuse de vecina lor la consiliul orășenesc, mama ei era „o artistă irlandeză nebună care face gălăgie la orice oră din zi și din noapte”. Emily n-ar fi contrazis o asemenea evaluare, dar ar fi adăugat „și care te face de râs”. Dacă mama n-ar fi târât-o întruna după ea în „misiuni speciale” la cules de „ingrediente indispensabile” din tomberoane pentru sculpturile ei zbanghii, nimic din toate astea nu s-ar fi întâmplat. Lui Emily nu i s-ar fi făcut atât de îngrozitor de rușine la școală și nu s-ar fi înfuriat așa de rău încât să fugă acasă și să sfârșească țipând la mama în bucătărie despre toate tâmpeniile absolut jenante pe care tot ea, mama, le făcuse la viața ei (exemple remarcabile fiind ușuratul în spatele unui tufiș într-o zi când venise să asiste la întrecerile sportive de la școală, eliberarea unui homar dintr-un acvariu într-un restaurant de fițe și mersul odată cu autobuzul în costumație de cal). Și nici n-ar fi făcut-o pe mama să plângă. Asta fusese… destul de oribil. De fapt, probabil spusese niște chestii pe care acum chiar le regreta. Iar tata o pedepsise atât de rău să nu mai iasă din camera ei, încât probabil pe viitor o păștea școlarizarea la domiciliu.
Dacă ar fi fost silită, să zicem, de o poțiune a adevărului sau așa ceva, Emily ar fi recunoscut că gura ei mare nu prea-i fusese de ajutor. Mama o numea „clonțul de familie”, de parcă ar fi fost o boală moștenită. Ei bine, dacă așa stăteau lucrurile, Emily avea o formă foarte gravă. Când era enervată sau stânjenită, clonțul începea să clănțăne de capul lui – iar mama ei era stânjenitor de enervantă tot timpul. Și de-asta Emily nu-și ceruse scuze, și de-asta nu mai avea voie să iasă din camera ei până la Crăciun.
În timp ce zăcea pe pat în întuneric, furia aceea înroșită în foc i se stinse și-i lăsă în gură un gust dezgustător de amar. Nu putea oare să rămână întinsă aici și să nu mai vorbească niciodată cu mama? Poate să intre în comă? Îi era totuși cam prea foame. Certurile-monstru consumau fără îndoială o grămadă de calorii. Ce-ar fi să dea o raită pe la frigi… CLANC! Scrâșnetul și zăngănitul cutiei poștale, deschisă și apoi trântită la loc în nișa ei din ușa de la intrare, îi întrerupseră planurile de piraterie culinară. Cine Dumnezeu aducea poștă la ora asta din noapte?

I think this book was so incredibly fun and adventurous, it reminded me of being a kid. I loved all of the characters and their personalities. It was all just such an engaging and exciting ride.
