The Invisible Man

H.G. Wells

3.39 AVERAGE

Was a good read. I liked the different tonal shifts but my favourite tone was the slightly comical and bemused lens that the narrator would take. It was an interesting concept and came across as incredibly modern and easy to read despite being published in 1897?!?!!! I also liked just how indefensible the main character is. Like he’s just a bad guy. He’s a douche. It’s fun to laugh at him (even though getting beaten to death by a mob is a bit intense). Also surprisingly sobering ending as his body returns back to visible.

Rather 3,5. It started out super interesting and it made me think of the amazing 1933 movie, I was sure this would be a 4 star book at least, especially after loving The Time Machine so much.

I'm not sure what it was but as I progressed in the book I became less interested in the story. It was also a bit confusing and hard to follow but that could be my fault as I had a bit of difficulty focussing on it.

So yeah it wasn't bad but lost interest in it, still looking forward to my next H.G. Wells adventure!

“And there it was, on a shabby bed in a tawdry, ill-lighted bedroom, surrounded by a crowd of ignorant and excited people, broken and wounded, betrayed and unpitied, that Griffin, the first of all men to make himself invisible, […]”

I truly believe that Griffin did nothing wrong, as the narrator said, he was wounded (physically and mentally), betrayed by people he trusted and unpitied by his terrible circumstances, which exasperated me bc, he repeatedly tried to explain why he acted the way he did and show remorse of his “terrible”actions (personally looking for a shelter and stealing food aren’t a crime for me but bigots will always be bigots)
Some can say that he deserved it for putting himself through that, but is just like the case of Victor Frankenstein, he tried to go beyond what is known and got kicked in the ass, the only difference was that he did it to himself and never with some cruel intention or to defy the world, just love for science and the desire to know more about a condition he already had.
Honestly it made me mad and was an interesting thing to hear while doing laundry.

What a strange and dark story. Not my favorite.

Given a 3 as I can appreciate that, at the time it was published, it must’ve been an incredible book. I however did not like the writing style and it just wasn’t a wonderfully enjoyable read. I do love the concept though and I think a lot more could’ve been done with it.

I have no idea what I just read…. It was comical, boring in some parts, and outright outrageous. It’s a story about a man who makes himself invisible and after realizing invisibility provides little advantage, he begins to terrorize the people around him in his frustration.

I expected more of this classic. But I’ve come to realize that most “classics” are absurd or average stories (at best). Welp, at least I can say I gave it a try.
