I LOVED this book. Salazar took such care in research that the reader feels immersed in the narrative. She also nurtures Lula, who like the title, grows over the course of the narrative. Well done.

I really learned a lot from this story. The immigrant families struggling to survive, working in such terrible conditions just to put food on the table is horrific.

I liked the story element of Lula losing her voice in the beginning, and then reclaiming. I loved how it aligned with her journey into standing up for herself. That was honestly a beautiful parallel.

Love hearing about the research details in the author's note. Sad to hear how much hasn't changed for farm workers but I guess that's why we keep trying.

Not really sure why this is written in verse--maybe it would have felt more intentional in print vs audio? As it is while the verse element made it fast and approachable it felt like falling into the verse novel trend than doing anything deliberate to enhance the story.

Well craftet story showcasing how difficult life is for migrant workers. Gave a little peek through of how hard they have to work. How little respect they are given and much harder they have to work compared to others. They have to stick together or else it's impossible to make change. Written in a enjoyable way for me.
