Unfortunately, I didn't like this as much as I expected after the previous book. Mind you, I still enjoyed it, but I didn't love it.
There was just too much family drama of the wrong kind and half the book, it seemed to me, was spent on various people's reactions to the relationship between Harper and Tolliver. Still, I liked the mystery pertaining to the Joyces and I never would have guessed what actually happened to Cameron, so kudos to the author. The flirting was still cringey as hell, though. Especially, in contrast to Manfred, who actually flirts like a real human being.
But I can still recomment the book to the fans of the series and the series to the fans of the author.

This is the 4th in the series featuring the character of Harper Connelly who at 15 was struck by lightning and acquired a 'gift' of finding dead people, which she has put to good use by providing a service for those who have unanswered questions. She is assisted by her stepbrother Tolliver. The past finally catches up with them.
I enjoyed this (at the moment) finale to this series I wish I could have given it 3.5 stars rather than 3. I like the character of Harper she is blunt and plain speaking and uses her gift to help others even though at times it is painful and takes a lot out of her. It is not like she makes a great deal of money in fact they just about get by so they are not exploiting others. Charlaine's writing style is easy to read and flows along well and keeps your attention. I often find myself thinking about the characters even when I'm not reading it puzzling through the story in my mind a sure sign that the story is capturing my attention. I found the conclusion a surprise maybe I should have guessed but I didn't. I recommend the series.

Started a little slow, but got interesting. Much better than the previous book, and also a good way to wrap up this quartet.
Harper "knows" things about dead people ever since she was struck by lightning when she was 15. She grew up on the wrong side of the tracks after her mother and father discovered drugs and started a downward spiral. Her father died and her mother remarried a man who was almost as bad an addict as she. Harper and her siblings had to grow up fast and learn to cope with many unwanted things. Her older sister, Cameron, disappeared on the way home from school eight years ago. Harper and Tolliver have been looking for her ever since. They travel to Texarkana to do a grave reading for a rich, influential family of ranchers. What they uncover leads to several murders and Tolliver getting shot. Tolliver's father has gotten out of jail after his imprisonment for child abuse and neglect. He wants to re-establish contact with Tolliver and Harper. They are both too wary to fall for Matthew's attempts. And, with good reason, as the reader comes to know.
I understand this is the last book in the Harper Connelly/Tolliver Lang series. I will miss them. But, several story lines are brought to satisfying conclusions. I hope Charlaine has new books up her sleeve. I love her writing.

A great ending! I've read the other books, and I've always figured out who the bad guys were, but this one constantly had me changing my opinion, and it surprised me pretty much until the very last word. I'm sad to say goodbye to Harper Connelly, she's such a great character and soooo different from Sookie and the world she inhabits. I love Harper's "talent" and I'll miss Manfred. Boy will I miss Manfred. Maybe he'll get his own book? Or somehow end up in Sookie's orbit. If she can't be with Eric, then I wouldn't mind her with the Pierced One.
A good conclusion to the series, although I am sad to see it end. Especially when Charlaine Harris wrote so many Aurora Teagarden books, which were boring in comparison to Harper Connelly. Oh well...
This is the final book in in the Harper Connelly series, and it’s more about Harper’s family than any sort of mystery. Not that Harper’s family isn’t already swallowed by the mystery of her sister Cameron’s disappearance. Harper and Tolliver take their budding (unconventional and unpopular) relationship to Texas to visit their little sisters, but an unfortunate incident means that they are going to be stuck there a while. Is someone after Harper? Or is Tolliver the target?
I thought Harris did a good job of wrapping up this series. Questions that have been unanswered for the previous 3 books are finally answered, and in ways that make sense but are also surprising. The only part that seemed a little too convenient was the seemingly unconnected hiring of Harper by some people with a tie to her past. This is one of Harris’s odder series, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I’m glad she wrote (what I think is) the final book and closed it out.

This whole series was actually quite disturbing! Incestuous relationships made it difficult to read!
Pretty solid mystery and some small but believable character development. I have enjoyed this series and liked that several major plotlines were resolved very nicely. While there could be more in the series, this felt like a series end book and it was a satisfying ending.
