I am trying to broaden my reading a little so I picked up a collection of Frost. I just don't get all the fussing and fawning. Some were ok but that is the best I would say about his work.
Poetry isn't really my thing, and it seems Frost isn't really my poet...
The man was seriously obsessed with nature, it seems. Of course I was already familiar with the title poem, because who isn't, but I found it amusing to see him apparently regret his choice of roads a few poems in.
'I was half boring through, half climbing through
A swamp of Cedar. choked with Oil of cedar
And scurf of plants, and weary and overheated,
And sorry I ever left the road I knew,
I paused and rested on a sort of hook.' (from An Encounter)
Made me chuckle anyway.

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost --Vivian Mineker’s illustrations of this famous Robert Frost poem are lovely! Happy Reading!
Beautiful. Robert Frost's poetry, for all intents and purposes, is what opened my heart to the little things in life. Every flower, every gust of wind that lifts my hair... I notice these things and wonder and think and live. To keep myself centered, I remind myself everyday that "the road less travelled by" makes all the difference. A rain shower brightens my day. Snow makes me feel warm inside. Rivers and streams help me breathe easier. Swells of grass in a dying summer breeze lift my heart. And all this began with Frost.

The Road Not Taken and Other Poems was the perfect poetry collection to read during late fall to close out my favorite time of year. The poems were evocative of the haunting, lonely, and starkly beautiful nature that surrounds the provincial towns of old New England. The selected poems from "A Boy's Will" and "The Mountain Interval" were by far my favorite- short, excellent rhyme schemes/rhythm, and layered with double meanings. I wasn't nearly as compelled by the narrative and non-rhyming poems from the "North of Boston" selections. I even found some of them hard to get through. However, the poems from the other sections were so stellar that this was still absolutely a 4 star read. I look forward to reading more of Robert Frost's poetry in the future, especially that I now understand which eras of his writing I like best.
"I took the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference."
I am in awe of how beautifully this book captures the majesty and mystery of Robert Frost's poem. That moment of indecision- which path to take- and those moments of inspiration when you realize that your journey has led you to a place of beauty and heart's ease; all these things are explored in this lovely picture book.
The artwork is warm and welcoming, inviting the reader into the story of a young man who is making choices in life. He grows up, gets married, and has children and grandchildren, and looks back on his journey and the choices he has made that have led him through his life. The illustrations are beautifully colored in warm yellows and oranges as the leaves fall from the trees in an autumn woodland.
I am completely enchanted with this lovely book! I almost cried reading this, because it touches your heart in a special way.
Even though it's a picture book, this would make a delightful gift for an adult who loves Robert Frost's poetry, or maybe for a graduation gift to a young person who is embarking on a life journey. And it's a great way to introduce Frost's poetry to children as well.
