I wanted to read this when it first came out but didn't get hold of it at the time and it slipped from my mind, so when I rediscovered it whilst researching Irish books for my book club it seemed like fate. Octogenarian Maurice Hannigan spends a seemingly ordinary night in the bar of a local hotel toasting five people who have been important to him. Over the course of the evening he recalls his life - events that shaped him into the man he is. I shan't say any more as I don't want to spoil it, but our book club met last night, and suffice to say we all thought it was a great book.

A beautifully written, poignant story about a man reviewing his life, family and loves. It is heartbreaking so be prepared.
I was planning to write a review describing how nice it is to read a book that delves into the heart of everyday long-lasting love. That life and love isn't dramatic and romatic, necessarily, but it is close and true and about sharing it with someone, someone you are compatilbe with and so on..
..and then as I sat on the couch reading the last few pages, I started to cry a little, and my husband noticed as I don't usually cry when I read books. After I was done he said "So, tell me about your book." Two sentences in, I started bawling, hick-up-crying while I talked him through the nooks and crannies of the book. I actually made him cry on the way (he's not a crier).
So this is my review: this book found a way deep into the core of me, because it describes something absolutely real and important. Life and love.

When I saw this for the nominee for the top goodreads fiction book, I thought it would be an extraordinary book. But I was disappointed. Expect the molly and tony stories, I didn't felt much any other character. Its a normal, nothing above the mark kind of book
