I think I just need to go looking for more books that revise the vampire trope because they really don't miss. Very weird but in a good way. Also love to see some Riley hate from Lydia, ifykyk.

this book had so much potential and i felt as if it fell flat. the last third of the book is very strong but still lacking. so many great concepts and themes are introduced: consumption, female relationships to food, sex and power, race, family and origin. but none are explored to the depth that they could be. the vampire is woman in this novel, i just wish it took it a step further. i would read more by this author, tho, as i feel like they have the potential to create wonderful work.

This book used delicious allegory to hit on a lot of heavy topics like colonization, displacement, generational trauma, gender politics, ED, and more. I totally devoured it!

That being said, significant parts felt a little too drawn out and were somewhat uninteresting to me, while the meatier bits went by too quickly for my tastes.

Selfishly, I was hoping for more carnality from this vampiric literary horror, but if you prefer your dark stories a little more tame, I would recommend this in a mouthwatering heartbeat.

Will absolutely read from Claire Kohda again.
