Better plot than vol 1, but the first half of the book was basically the unrealistic renewal of Jory and Sam's relationship after Sam went undercover for 2 years and then spent the third year faffing around not getting his man back. I've gotta say, I'm not a huge fan of Jory's tattoo, or Sam's constant "you're mine/belong to me" commentary. But once the book picked up on the serial killer plot, the relationship became much more interesting. Plus, Jory got to solve mysteries and use his almost super human people skills to befriend all types of people.

It's been a while since I read the first volume of Matter of Time, so it took me a couple of chapters to get back into the world. But then I was hooked again. Jory is still such a shit, but you can't help but love him anyway. I would say that Sam has the patience of a saint to put up with him, but... he really doesn't. Yet somehow it works.

The second part of this volume is where it really works. Book 4 is a mess of a mystery going all the way back to the murder that first brought them together. The uniqueness of Jory really gets a chance to shine as tackles a stalker that he's not quite sure he even believes in, naturally. The whodunnit and Sam and Jory's antics kept me flipping pages until the final reveal. And damn, what an ending.

I don't know...Sam returns 3 years after he left Jory on some BS mission. Of course he immediately starts bullying Jory and saying they belong together. Jory held strong...for a week.
I will say this, Sam has grown and so has Jory. Even so, I'm not invested or emotionally connected to their "coupledom" and I found myself rolling my eyes often. I'm not sure if I'll continue because after watching their Maury Povich-ish relationship, I'm not so amused anymore :(

2nd re-listen. Dropping to 4 stars from 5.

Both narration and story are a 3.5 stars rounding up and not down as I would want for reasons that will be stated below.

This series and its editing hasn't been Paul Morey's best work but for growly Sam Kage I can forgive alot.

I'm debating between a long, ranting review or just saying how TSTL was Jory at about 90% of the story and call it a day. Don't get me wrong, I own the audiobook since 2013 and the book since 2012. (I have lost counts the many times I've listened to it and/or read, despite it saying 2nd at the beginning of the review). The series was a comfort read but growing up and maturing as a reader I started noticing things that were just too unbelievable and the story started losing credit.

So here I am in 2021 amazed (not in a good way) with Jory and his unique ways (not a compliment) of dealing with everyone and everything. Sam really needed to do a lot more grovelling and not so much with the cave man but darn it all it's why we love him. Frankly the scenes together between Sam and Jory are the best thing in the story and everything else is a lot of daytime drama.

Truth be told I'm not sure I'll ever come back for a re-read because the story has already lost a lot of it's shine and I don't want for it to lose more since darn it all I love Sam and Jory!

I preferred this one to the first two, mostly because Jory seems a little more grownup.

It’s not you, it’s me

My rating is not a reflection of how good the book is, it’s just a rating of much I liked it. I found it hard to get into Jory’s head and as the primary POV, that made the plot feel distant to me. I loved this author’s US Marshals so I think this is just a character disconnect for me.

I really tried to like it, but it was hard. I couldn't get past the macho alpha "MINE" attitude of Sam and wasn't really impressed by Jory either. Reading a book where I don't like the characters is really hard for me. That makes me sad, because it's one of my best friend's favorite MM series and I really wanted to like it as much as she did. It did not happen. I don't know if I will continue with this series.

Audio review

I love this one as the guys get together and actually work at staying together.
Book 3 was my favourite in this edition, as I'm not a major fan of the storyline in book 4 and Jory's complete disregard for everyone as he wanders off and does exactly what he wants.
Book 3 we get to watch the two get back together and how Jory actually made Sam work a little to come back, not enough, but it's still an entertaining ride.
