a new favorite classic of mine! daphne du maurier’s ability to vividly describe a setting allows full immersion. the entirety of the novel, i felt as though i was truly there. her writing is absolutely gorgeous, and while combining it with the plot, the story catches your attention straight away.

The first half of this book was kind of a drag to get through, but the second half was infinitely better. This isn't my favourite classic, and I definitely don't see why it is so many peoples favourite, but the plot twist really threw me and the second half (or at least 100 pages) absolutely redeemed it and brought it to a 4 stars, also the ending ????? My jaw dropped, and i was frantically flipping the page only to realise there was only the afterword left. The mc is so relatable and delulu that it hurts. Maxim is an awful husband, and I felt so bad for the mc throughout the whole book. But whoever had the idea to class this book as a 'romance'... are you okay?? This book was not romantic. It was sad, and you know, while reading it that the mc won't end up with a happy ending and that she'll always love him more than he deserves.

i hate everyone in this book except for the main character but theyre all so insanely interesting. really really good mystery even if i predicted it from the start. i just spent the whole time convincing myself i was wrong and then it turned out i was right lol

I thought it was a bit slow to start, but as you get into it, it is very gripping. The writing is beautiful and paints the scenes and the tension really well.
It also just felt very human, and was fascinating seeing the journey that the main protagonist went through psychologically and how the different dynamics of characters interacted.
