I wanted to be scared instead I was bored.
It was way too long, a lot of parts should have been cut out, like the the boring teen drama. I might come back to it later i don’t know

Thank you to Atria Books and Jennifer Fawcett for letting me read Beneath the Stairs early. This one publishes on 2/22/22

I really enjoyed this book! It’s creepy, it’s interesting and the characters are really well developed. The atmosphere in this one is why I love books like this but the ending left me a little disappointed. Overall this one really hooked me in and I recommend it to anyone needing a spooky, atmospheric escape.

Sumner’s Mills holds the eerie Octagon House, a spooky abandoned house hidden deep in the woods. A man killed his family there and the rumors of its stories keep most people away. Except for 13 year old kids trying to prove themselves to each other. When Clare and her bff Abby go exploring they soon find their whole loved changed forever. Twenty years later, adult Clare hears Abby has attempted suicide in the Octagon House and is now in a coma. Clare returns to her roots to try to uncover what actually happened in that house.

I struggled to get into this book for the first few chapters. I kept thinking that the idea
For the story was such a good one that I just needed to give the author time to get where she was going.
I’m glad I stuck with it because I definitely became invested in figuring out the mystery of the Octagon House. A nice spooky read full of friendship, romance and a few scares!

I had sooo many issues with this mystery/thriller! The cover was so pretty and I had heard great things but for me this book was way tooo slow moving, had way too much going on and I got completely lost with all the timeline switches. Overall I was just really bored and not captvated at all.

Recommended for fans of creepy haunted house stories like those by Jennifer McMahon and Riley Sager’s Home before dark.

This was okay on audio. I definitely would have DNF’d if I hadn’t been listening. I found the ending got wrapped up really quickly and suddenly and felt like the core of the mystery never really got explained.

⚠️CW: character with BPD

When I went into this book I was expecting creepy hanuted house vibes like Home Before Dark (which I LOVED). This however was not that.

It’s been 20 years since Clare and her best friend Abby snuck into the Octagon House in the woods. However they both have been pulled to this house since then. Now it’s 20 years later, and Abby just went back and attempted to commit suicide. Clare returns to find out the story of this spooky house.

The story seemed to wander off a lot. It would be interesting one minute and then the next it wouldn’t. And NOT ALL BOOKS NEED A ROMANCE! This is my latest pet peeves in books. And if it’s a thriller - I don’t need to feel like I’m reading a romance too.

I didn’t want to keep reading though as I had to know WHAT IS IN THR BASEMENT?!
