I stopped reading when it became devastating. I'm not in the head space for it. However leading up to that point the book was very tender and sweet, about innocence and love.

I don’t really write reviews but OH MY GOD. why. I’m so upset I cried for a whole fucking hour. Why. It was so good too. I think it would have been just has good without the plot twist though.

I read the last 200 pages in one night. It was such a cute love story with an unexpected sad ending. I knew the book was going to be sad but I didn’t realize it was that kind of sad. I want to climb into this book and give Anna a hug. I can officially say this is the first book to ever make me cry/ sob.

“I hope if you write about us tonight it feels like the beginning of a very long story”.

“ I know if I could fit you into one of these pockets, I’d carry you everywhere with me”.

“I’m glad I’m under the same sky as you”.

“To love is to always know that it can be taken away. The pain is in the having, because you know exactly what you stand to lose”.

This is a very quotable book. And now I am going to try my best to express my feelings and how much I enjoyed and loved this beautiful BEAUTIFUL story!

Anna James needs help with a duet in their school band and decides to ask Weston for help. Weston is a music genius, and people think he’s weird, a bad weird and strange. But he’s a music genius, and so Anna approaches him and asks for his help, or more like begs with her eyes. Weston calls it The Happening when Anna storms into his life demanding his help with the duet. He finds himself saying yes and agreeing to help her. They start to spend a lot of time together perfecting the duet. And as they spend time together, they learn A LOT about the other. Anna sees Weston as not strange. She doesn’t understand why people think that. Yes, he wears a leather jacket all year round, but he’s not strange. He suffered through his parent’s divorce and he didn’t handle it well, and now he’s lonely. Weston realizes Anna is lonely too. She acts very optimistic and happy because that’s what everyone expects of her, including her family. But Weston knows her and sees her. They continue to learn more about each other and it starts to turn into something more, and this is their story.

I rarely cry when I read books, but this is the second book this year that had me sobbing. I still start crying when I think about the story too much. Do NOT let my weeping deter you though! This is such a beautiful, heartbreaking, and adorable love story. It’s a slow burn that happens in a matter of a few weeks, so yes, it seems like instalove, but it’s not! The way their relationship develops is just perfect and exactly how I think a proper relationship would develop when you’re attracted to someone and spend A LOT of time together and talk. You get to know them and it can turn into something more, even with the little time you’ve spent together.

My heart goes out to both Anna and Weston. They each dealt with tough things. Weston’s parents had divorced and it was not a good time for him. He changed schools and many blamed him for burning down a local tree claiming he acted out, even though there was no reason for them to think that aside from the fact it’s a small town and apparently love to spread ridiculous rumors and gossip. Anna seems to be this perfect happy girl, but she’s not. She’s not okay, and Weston is the only one who actually got her. He could see that she suffered from these shadows that would crowd around her and cause her to be depressed and sad, when she’s supposed to be this always happy person. She has friends, and yet she still felt alone. Ugh! That conversation she had with her parents, oh that just struck me in the heart! Especially when they had no idea how she actually felt. Her own parents! But Weston did! He got her and she got him!

I wish I could reread this book again for the very first time. This gave me all the feels and hit me everywhere. I love stories like this one. Realistic, heartbreaking yes, but still so beautiful. Please just read this book!

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. Thank you to the publishers for a free arc!

It’s so refreshing to finally see a book about marching band when 95% of them are instead about football! I grew up in a small Texas town and each of them might have a football team but they all have a band too!!!

I alternated between physical and audiobook and eventually had to give up on the audiobook because the narrator didn’t know how to correctly pronounce shako and it was KILLING ME. If you’re gonna have a niche book please make sure your audiobook reader can pronounce any niche words😭😭

Ashley did just a stunning job at capturing that high of being in love in high school for the first time and it was so fun to fall back into this world for a few hundred pages.
