YA romance with a high school band background - it was not something that really caught my attention at first, but it was interesting the way things evolved and how the story unfolded. I don't care too much about marching bands, but the main characters get together because they will have a duet in the band. They end up helping each other in many other ways as well. It's also a sort of a come of age book. Not bad, especially if you ignore most of the band stuff.

Enfield is a big Texas town where fall means football, but for their marching band, it means it’s time to work.

This year is Anna’s year to finally show off how great of a saxophone player she is. When she gets paired with Weston for a duet. Weston is known as nothing but trouble in their small town, but as Anna starts working more and more with him she realizes that everyone is wrong about him. The more they practice the more their feelings for each other grow and they both learn to fight for what it is that they love.

You’ve done it again Ashley Schumacher. You’ve given me characters that I love dearly and you skillfully rip my heart out with your brilliant writing.

I wish I could erase my memory of this book and read it again. I loved everything about this book. It’s a typical ‘girl falls for the bad boy who is really not a bad boy’ forbidden love trope, but written so well. I loved the main characters and that the chapters went back and forth between their points of view.

There wasn’t really anything I didn’t like about this book except for maybe a couple of Anna’s friends, but they’re necessary I guess.

To be completely honest, I would have read this book no matter what is was going to be about. I read Amelia Unabridged last year by the same author and it easily became one of my most favorite books and I was not let down with this book. The books are not related, but both are definitely heartbreakingly wonderful reads.

Ashley Schumacher, I am prepared to read any book write.

This book...oh, this book.
The lack of marching band books is actually a little bit depressing compared to the sheer number of football romances, so when I first saw this book, I was so excited.

...

I felt understood by this book because it was so marching band. It captured the heartaches and victory of being in band perfectly. There were so many quotes that I loved! And Anna reminded me of me because I write in my journal too to keep the shadows away. And Weston was so sweet, and I loved him and Anna so so so much.

I should've checked the table of contents. I knew something sad would happen but I didn't expect it to that degree. My heart hurt for them. And yes, I did cry--I don't cry over books but, this reminded me so much of If He Had Been With Me. That sinking feeling when I realized his chapter was blank was unlike any other.

The feeling of the title clicking too...

Oh, this book will be on my mind for a while.

I immediately decided to read Full Flight because I so thoroughly enjoyed the author’s debut novel, Amelia Unabridged. This is a bit more grounded in reality, without the bookish fantasy threads going through AU. But they both have themes of friendship, loss and grief, and feeling lonely and separate. Both are lovely and real and struck at my heart. And as a band member in high school myself, and a mom to three marching band kids, it was fun to be so immersed in marching band in a novel. I immediately handed it over to my youngest, currently in band, who enjoyed all the band geek references. Even as fun as it is for readers who have been or are in marching band, it still will ring true for others, as band is just a construct where the important themes can play out.

I feel like that is a good enough review for now.

A YA love story that is equally beautiful and heartbreaking - something I've come to expect from Ashley Schumacher. Set in small town Texas, two teen bandmates have to work together on a duet and fall in love along the way. Anna and Weston bond over a shared love of music and their friendship was a delight to see evolve. Knowing what was sure to come though, I spent most of the book waiting for the other shoe to drop, which it inevitably did around the 85% mark. That said, even knowing there was going to be a sad ending this story is still a great read. I thought the way grief is dealt with was incredibly well done. Recommended for fans of John Green, Nicholas Sparks or You've reached Sam by Dustin Thao. Much thanks to NetGalley and Tantor Audio for my ALC.

Full Flight took a while for me to get into but I’m soooo glad that I stuck with it. The second half of the book was everything. I loved Weston and Anna so much. I think Ashley did a great job at tackling some of the harder things in the life of a high schooler, including being judged by rumors and people choosing not to get to know the real you based on those rumors. Full Flight definitely helped sooth my soul. I connected with Anna and what she was going through, being in her shoes…and let me tell you I’ve felt EVERYTHING she felt. It’s an awful experience but it’s nice to see you aren’t alone even in the darkest times of your life. I think my favorite part of the whole book was the epilogue.

Thank you Netgalley and Wednesday Books for the copy of Full Flight in return of an honest review.
