When I first read this, I went into it with the mindset that most of my favorite booktubers did not like it.... that being said I was SUCKED into this book. I read this ENTIRE book on VACATION. it's a good read and I'm now starting Blood and Honey.

Future me edit like 18 months later: after reading book 2 and about 10% of book 3 and also reevaluating what good relationship tropes are, i have to go back and change this from 5 to 3 stars. It’s an decent read if you don’t mind the misogyny, sexism and just plain bad attempt at enemies to lovers. That being said, it’s nowhere near as bad as books 2&3. I forced myself to read book 2 as i was in the remote Alaskan wilderness with no internet connection to download a new book but i became rather disenchanted after the 30% mark. Book 3, i tried to convince myself that I should at least finish out the series…. NOPE. That was a total DNF for me. Moral of the story, I’ve grown as a person and now understand why most booktubers hated this series.

this one was a little difficult to get into at first, but it got better and better as it went on.

I’m still confused about the world this is set in (was it magical realism in France, or a totally different world?) but it was a fun, crazy and sometimes chaotic story. Love Lou. She’s such a great FMC.

Such an amazing book! It had me desperate to keep reading. The enemies to lovers dynamic, the lore behind the magic world, the wat, its all just incredibly well-written.

I felt like something in the middle of the book was missing
SpoilerThe relationship between Lou & Reid lacks development. They jumped from "I kinda like him/her" to "(S)he's the love of my life" so fast, I didn't get it. Authors, please! don't tell! Show! Thank you.

Other than that, I thought this was a pretty decent read. Plus, I LOVED the friendship between Lou & Coco. Best thing in the book

“You really think I could knock two fully grown men unconscious?”
My husband’s reply came instantaneously. “Yes.”

“I loved her. Despite everything. Despite the lies, the betrayal, the hurt. Despite the Archbishop and Morgane le Blanc. Despite my own brothers. I don't know if she returned that love, and I didn't care. If she was destined to burn in Hell, I would burn with her.”

3.5 // ehem ... BIG TIDDY LIDDY. Yeah that's about it thanks for coming to my tedtalk about this mediocre underdeveloped ya fantasy which should basically just be referred to as romance because of how underdeveloped the world building is. Ok yes that was admittedly a bit harsh but I like have no sympathy for this overdone attempt at writing YA fantasy.

book 1 in my quest to find a solid 5 stars fantasy book — this book was just not it. 2.75⭐️

reid had the personality of an angry potato. lou felt very fake and i couldn’t really understand who she was trying to be. they had no chemistry whatsoever.

i also think the entire plot of the book happened in less than a month (?), with 90% of the book happening within 2 weeks. which is a massive pet peeve of mine. SORRY! i just don’t get how a love story (especially one introduced as enemies to lovers) and associated plot can take place in such a short period of time. i can’t feel for characters that hated each other the day before and now are ready to say i love you because the other person is hOt and qUirKy. yeah, it just felt very rushed and not believable.

also all the plot twists and devices felt soooooo deus ex machina and predictable.

i loved the premise though!! i wish the book itself had done it justice
