Too tired to write anything. Unsure how I even felt about this, but I think 4 is a little strong, we’ll see how it goes tomorrow.
I gave this 3.5 on StoryGraph and Bookmory.
This wasn’t an easy read for me. It dragged for over half of it, I think. I finished this 2 days ago and kept meaning to write something and didn’t until now, after I’ve finished The Little Sisters of Eluria. And mayhap it’s because I’d just finished Eyes of the Dragon but I surely expected Thomas or Dennis to make an appearance. Could be I just took The Dark Tower “extended version” too literally.
Roland is a gunslinger in some world where there is barely any life at all. He’s been chasing the Dark Man for most of his life, and is only now catching up/getting close. But the Dark Man is a magician of sorts, and places traps for him along the way. Aka people for Roland to care for, which get in the way of sensible decisions. So far I’m not a fan of Roland. I know that a lot of SK Stans have real big feelings about this series, so I shall continue on.

Audio Reread ending 10/5/25
I think in this case it’s important to call out audio reread, even though most of my rereads are, because 1 - I didn’t remember as much as I thought I would and 2 - I still didn’t like it very much, but I know I never give audiobooks my full attention bc I mostly listen at work.
I’m going to start the next one tomorrow, but if I find I’m still struggling then I’m going to have to give up and go back to the books. This is a series that deserves your full attention and I just don’t listen to audio at home.
I DID pick up on quite a few things, which of course just means I missed as many or more, foreshadowing and such. And I also just learned this edition I own and have read and am now listening to is a rewrite, and fans are conflicted as to which is better and why, so it looks like I’m gonna be trying to find the OG copy.

Couldn’t get into it. Stuck on how many times the word “palaver” was used.

I only decided to read this bc Randall Flagg from [b:The Stand|149267|The Stand|Stephen King|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1213131305l/149267._SX50_.jpg|1742269] is the same villain in this series. Everything I didn't like about the Stand was mirrored in this book. It's supposed to follow characters living in an apocalyptic USA. The apocalypse setting is interesting, and I can definitely see the parallels King was trying to emphasize by making this a fantasy/western. However, I was just bored by everything. The plot and the characters felt super meh to me.
That being said, if you like the Mandalorian tv show, I think you'd probably like this. Similar vibes.
As I've said before: Stephen King is a great writer...
