I don't understand the hype not only for this series but Stephen King in general. I don't read horror and don't intend to but if this book is anything to go by on Stephen King's writing, then I don't get it.
It was absolute gibberish it made no sense, and I could of DNF'd it so many times. For a 238 page book it felt like an absolute slog to get through. Definitely do not recommend reading this book.

Been going through my old photos and screen shots where I captured books to read some day and this came up. It is perfect for a camping trip ghost story. A western, a mystery, gory and pointless, but you gotta hand it to the guy, be can write. You really feel for the characters, and the weird scenarios are vividly painted with words.

Many reviewers of this book say that in retrospect, after they've read the other parts of The Dark Tower series, their appraisal of The Gunslinger went way up. At the moment, having not read the rest of the series, my conclusion is that The Gunslinger is not so much a novel but a needlessly long prologue to a novel. The narrative also reminds me way too much of the far better written "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy--Stephen King spices his version up with a sprinkling of fantasy and the supernatural. I will say that I thought the Man in Black's soliloquy on the mystery/unknowability of the universe was excellent. When I get a hold of The Dark Tower, #2, perhaps I'll repent and call The Gunslinger a masterpiece, but I kind of doubt it.

I'm just confused. I jumped all over, I didn't follow it very well as to how it got from place to place to place. I might revisit it before continuing the series and if I do, I'll update my review. In the mean time, I enjoyed it....I think...
