This was fine, but truthfully I skimmed a lot. It really hit me that I wasn’t going to apply much from this when she listed a full SEVEN products someone my age should use, in addition to having two different cleansers. And that’s not seven makeup products, these are things to use before makeup. And she recommends rotating brands within those seven, not when the product runs out, but on a daily basis. Yeah, no.

So, it was kind of like when I get my semi-annual hair cut and the stylist tells me all the things I should put in my hair before I style it. Would it help? Probably. Is that how I want to spend my life? Nope.

The other uuhhh, heck no moment was when she mentioned that there’s no reason to spend more than £150 on a serum, you’re just paying for packaging at that point. Ummm wha???? Literally no article of clothing have I spent that much money on. Only one that comes close is running shoes, and those last 6 months.

However, her skin does look great, so the advice probably works. But I’d rather spend 5 min putting on sunscreen and mascara and call it good.

A skincare bible.

I’ve followed Caroline Hirons’ blog/social media for years now and I love her no nonsense approach to skincare. She’s not afraid to call out shady brands and practices. Having worked in the beauty industry myself, I recognised a lot of the marketing techniques that brands use to sell their products, so I appreciated Caroline’s no BS discussion on the topic.

This is a great reference book and definitely one to buy, especially if you’re a skincare newbie.
funny informative

I've been a once-a-day, wash in the shower, throw on some lotion and go type all of my adult life. A couple kids, some melasma and a dull complexion later, checking in for the first time on how to "care" for my skin, I was scoffing at prices and utterly lost by all the serums, acids and order of routine (what routine?? I sleep in my mascara!) And don't get me started on all the mommy friends selling pyramid scheme creams and whatnot over the years on FB.

Good for the basics of the science of skincare and it is very easy to understand.

Caroline Hirons has a wonderful knack for simplifying skin care concepts. I was a beauty editor for three years, and frankly felt burnt out on the topic, but this streamlined back-to-basics has reined me back in. Her book is a solid reference to have on hand—it did leave me with questions that go beyond the basics (also I really wanted her to dish more industry gossip, but she was too dignified for that!), so hopefully she’ll write a follow up!
