I love weird magical realism and I love mysteries, so I was expecting to also love this book. How wrong I was. The premise caught my interest, and I was completely ready to untangle it, but the actual story turned out to be incredibly boring and confusing. It legitimately felt more like a fever dream or drug trip than a narrative. I am not 100% convinced that the main character wasn't just high or hallucinating the entire thing - it's that ridiculous, and none of it is explained in any way that makes complete sense. If I liked the characters, I might've been able to put up with it more, but the main character felt like a cardboard cutout of every basic 2010s YA heroine ever, and while there was some possible LGBTQ representation (which I love, being queer myself), that too was oddly and pointlessly ambiguous. Add an extremely awkward and incestuous romance subplot to all of that, and you get this book. I wasted my time reading it.

Extremely confusing, extremely satisfying, extremely surreal
Like seriously, what the hell was going on?

I would like to mention that The Accident Season has one of the best drunken party scenes I've ever had the pleasure to read. This is where the surreal comes in; everything is hazy, broken, and somehow lovely. Very strange.

Romance was A+
I didn't think Cara's relationship with Sam was weird or anything. It felt very real, although their dramatic love declarations could have been slightly less exaggerated. I enjoyed it, anyway

End late-night-review

"It's the accident season, the same time every year. Bones break, skin tears, bruises bloom."

A few of my scattered thoughts about a book that scattered my thoughts:

★ Interesting premise, poor execution.
★ The best aspects in The Accident Season - the eerie atmosphere, whimsical tone and a sense that something just isn't right.
★ The mystery aspect is extremely confusing.
★ This is a perfect October or Autumn read.
★ I love found families, quirky and unique characters and close bonds, but I felt indifferent towards the characters in The Accident Season. They felt so distant
★ The writing is beautiful
★ I've been looking for a magical realism book to love, but maybe the genre just isn't my cup of tea.
It's not The Accident Season, it's me
"Accidents happen. Our bones shatter, our skin splits, our hearts break. We burn, we drown, we stay alive."

I chose this book because I’ve become more interested in magic realism and it did not disappoint. Certain things I felt were almost too obvious but then by the end you realize that that was by design. I enjoyed the descriptions of the Irish landscape as well as that of the one house. Very YA friendly in regards to subject matter; not so clean or simple as to be naive and boring but not so detailed or over the top as to be truly disturbing. There’s one line about the rings of a fallen tree that will stay with me for a very long time.

I found the The Accident Season to be mostly unremarkable. I did have a general sense of curiosity throughout, because I wanted to know what was going on. The story really picked up in the last 70 pages or so but, to me, that didn’t make it worth a higher rating.

This book is spectacular. I just finished it, and I feel like I've just crawled out of the most mysterious, eerie, spellbinding place and am not quite the same as I was before. I'd been ruined for books for a long time after reading Bone Gap, and I feel like this is the first book that's held up to that experience. It was dark, strange, and beautiful. Stunning writing, clever, intricately wrought story elements from the very first page, and a narrator who your heart just breaks for, time and time again. I felt like I lived this book, rather than just reading it. Highly, highly recommended.

I thought this book was so creepy-cool! Like, so creepy-cool that I'm going to make a special Goodreads shelf called "creepy-cool" just for this book. Other books may join this book on said shelf eventually, but for now, it stands alone as the most creepy-cool book I've ever read. Understandably, not everyone will enjoy this book as much as I did - it's unique, it's weird, it's out there - but if you're up for something "creepy-cool", I say go for it - it's definitely Roxy-recommended!

Beautifully written and lyrical, although confusing at times on what's actually going on versus what is metaphoric. Good characters, although the protagonist's point of view towards herself is more enjoyable. One relationship in particular made me quite uncomfortable, and the secrets of the book contain some sensitive/triggering material. Overall, a good read.

Most of the bad reviews ive seen have come from people who went into the book with preconceived notions. I had absolutely no idea what the book was about i didn't even read the blib on the back so i think that helped me appreciatethe book for what it was. Everything about this book spoke to me in a way I didn't think was possible. I'm not good at explaining what I mean but it truly captivated me. As the book goes on it makes you feel more lost but at the same time it's setting up the dominoes so that you can watch them all fall down at the end and slide into place.
Elise being the daughter was an amazing twist I didnt see coming but it all made sense.
