🚨DOG DEATH: Main character’s dog is killed by a spear on page.
Loved it! A nice, straightforward, easy read filled with lyrical descriptions, excitement, and passion. I’m glad Sam the dog was avenged. The scene where Phalinger lay dying reminded me so much of the moving scene in War and Peace where Andrei is lying wounded on the battlefield at Austerlitz where they both notice and marvel at the sky and nature and realize their love for life.
I read this book in memory of my Dad who absolutely loved Louis L'Amour. I enjoyed it but it took me a bit longer since it is not my preferred genre. However, I did appreciate the glimpse into frontier life, especially now that I am living out west. A good read and I will read other of his titles and look forward to visiting Durango, CO where L'Amour did a lot of his writing.
The nicest thing you can say about this is that it doesn’t hold up very well after all this time.
