Beautiful art, fantastic writing, ‘BRAZEN’ really does teach you something about fantastic women you recognize and some you may not.
inspiring
Coincidentally I read this the day before Int’l Women’s Day — what perfect timing! Amazing stories of women in history who did Great things, but whose stories and names aren’t known as well as they should be. Inspiring, at times witty, other times making you feel sad, or indignant, or full of happiness. A wonderful book full of awe-inspiring people.
There have been many recently released anthologies of women in history who broke down barriers and lived lives outside the norm. That's a great thing, but it means that anyone putting out a book along those lines needs to find a way to make theirs stand out from the pack. Penelope Bagieu successfully does this by focusing mostly on women who would still be considered odd, or "brazen" even by today's standards. That means that Brazen is forward thinking beyond many of its counterparts.
I thought this was informative for sure, at times even inspiring. It covers a diverse group of rebel ladies and I learned loads. However, I was missing depth here and there. Sometimes I felt like we were going into unnecessary detail, other times I felt I was missing out on things. For example, the inclusion of Temple Grandin as an autism advocate felt quite controversial to me, as I soon found out she is also known for some worrisome ableist views around autism. I found this disappointing.
Overall, I wouldn't praise this for its storytelling, and the translation felt off sometimes. Its strong points lie in the graphic elements, which is what makes this such an original, fun and accessible read!

I really enjoyed the art style of the graphic novel. I thought each story was well researched and it described the life of each woman enough so the reader could understand. Overall I thought it was a good book.
This is one of those books where once I started reading, I could not stop. I loved all aspects of this book: the art, the women, and their stories. I want more!
