Read with my 8yo and really enjoyed it. Couldn’t recall ever having read it before; guess it didn’t make much of an impression the first time around. This time, we both liked the suspense and the wordplay.

I want to go poaching.

A lesser know book by Dahl, and a shame it is! Definately one of his best.

I loved it!

Several years ago, "Danny the Champion of the World was made into a tv movie, starring Jeremy Irons as Danny's father, his real-life son Samuel as Danny, & his father-in-law Cyril Cusack as Doc Spenser. I loved it, but somehow, I never got around to reading the book, (despite being a huge Roald Dahl fan), until now.

A genuinely sweet story about the relationship between a single father & his son, it's also an adventure involving, of all things - poaching! Like all Dahl stories, this one has slightly quirky characters, richly drawn, & three-dimensional. Danny & his dad, & a few other adults are good, kind, & understanding. The bad guys are truly horrible (by kid standards). There's danger & suspense, but nothing that would give a child nightmares or anxiety. Dahl's storytelling draws you in & won't let you go until the end (even adults!). You feel like you're part of the story, & his characters feel like treasured friends.

Sentimental Dahl story about a boy and his father and the little English town in which they live. There's really not much of a plot to this children's book, especially when compared to some of the wilder Roald Dahl stories he wrote, but this one certainly has more family values in it than most of his other great works.

I personally didn't find this to be one of his more compelling books, but my boys all liked it and that's really all that matters.
