Danny has always been my favorite Roald Dahl book. And after reading Fantastic Mr. Fox and then James and the Giant Peach with my seven-year-old, it seemed time to break it out.
After all these years, I still love Danny and his father. And I love their ingenious ways to catch pheasants. As a parent, however, I had to stop in the narrative to make sure my son knew that it was not a good idea to go around stealing other people's property. After the life lessons were rammed into his head, we then just had a good time with the story.
Dahl is the master of a terrific, happy ending where everyone gets what they deserve. Now I just need to decide which one is next.

My favorite Roald Dahl book, and that's saying a lot because he's been my favorite author since I learned how to read. It's better than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He's a genius.

I've read mist Roald Dahl, but this one eluded me somehow. A friend declared it her favorite so I gave it a read. It's a sweet father-son story, and Dahl does a especially good job capturing a child's wonder an admiration for their parent. As for it being Dahl's best, I think it's a small notch below.
