A great story about a father and son
Teachers should read this story aloud to their classes. It is a happy tale about a dad and his son and their adventures in the woods. Danny is an endearing boy who dotes on what a wonderful dad he has. A dad who cooks for him, is patient with him, teaches him, tells good stories, and discusses important life things to him. Highly recommend.

I think this was one of Roald Dahl's more grown-up books. Well I say that, though it is still geared towards children. It's not quite as zany as most of his others, and I've only given it three stars because I didn't find it so memorable. Then again, perhaps that's because we had to read it in school.

This was a re-read of a childhood favourite. Kid me would probably have rated it five stars, and I have very fond memories of it (and the Jeremy Irons film too). Now I was suddenly aware of all the subtext with the poaching and it took a bit of the joy out of it. Sympathising with Victor was definitely not something I did before. Still, even with that the father/son dynamic is still an absolute favourite of mine, and it is just a sweet tale of getting one over the Bad Guys.
(Also, more randomly, a few moments that had stuck with me for literal years were: the description of people smiling with their eyes, the idea of Danny's father writing a different fact every day for the schoolchildren and the image of the meat pie Danny gets given with eggs hidden inside of it like buried treasure. I don't even particularly like pie and his description of it was enough to get me salivating. I'm not sure what it means that those were the ones I chose to remember, but reading the lines again was like coming across old friends.)

Danny lives with his single father in a gypsy caravan (which is like a luxurious trailer) behind a mechanic shop/gas station. The two are best friends. One night, Danny wakes up to find that his dad is missing. His father explains that he goes to poach quail from the local rich miser. Soon, the two begin to work together to create the biggest poaching heist around.
This is a great father/son book. I feel that maybe I am too adult because I sympathized with the villain. While the guy was a jerk, the town was stealing from him so... A quick, fun book that even makes references to other Dahl works.
