Being written by a new author, I was very hesitant to read this at first. Lisbeth (the whole reason for reading this series) didn't really become a central character until about 1/3 of the way through the book so it took me awhile to get into it, but once the action got going I raced through pretty quickly. I wouldn't rate it at the same level as Larsson's original books (and nothing will beat the first one), but I was glad to at least discover what has been going on with Lisbeth and Blomkvist. And of course I'll have to read the next one, too.

I wonder if I didn't enjoy this one as much as the last 3 because of the different writer or because I had seen the movies multiple times before ever cracking the books? That said I do still enjoy revisiting these characters.

The final act is quite good but the first two are not very well paced and filled with more contrivances than it can reasonably get away with. The previous books are meticulous, even when plodding, in order to generate some faith from the reader so that when something contrived happens there is so much detail buttressed into the fiction that the contrivances don’t matter.

Unfortunately the new writer just doesn’t have the same chops as the previous one. The psychology and headspace of the characters is shifted so that some actions sometimes don’t feel aligned with what’s known about them from previous books. It’s a bit jarring and takes a bit to get used to. The style shifts from a very detailed account to a more generic feeling thriller. The contrivances are around tropes in that genre. Evil twin, hyper sexualized manipulative femme fatale, and Lisbeth seems more toned down. The previous novels are completely unapologetic about the authors stance regarding systemic problems. It feels a bit toothless.

What I did like however, was the payoff at the end. The book felt a bit inflated as it recounts the same events from multiple view points, but the wrap up at the end was pretty satisfying. It’s still interesting, if somewhat commercial fiction feeling. Still fun and still engaging to return to a story with these characters. The technical information feels well researched and detailed. Things like hacking and burner phones and A.I and the like augment the story beyond what I’d typically consider pure commercial fiction. I’ll continue on with the next book still.

Great story and very much in keeping with the original story line. I'd read these all again.

This was as good as Stig Larsen’s books. I was happy to know Lisbeth lives on .

It was easy to dive into this story and enjoy the familiar characters and setting, but it is not a perfect follow up to Steig's trilogy, although I still enjoyed it. There is a lot of point-of-view swapping with an expanded cast of characters which keeps the reader a little more distant from Blomkvist and Salander, and because of that there is more dramatic irony than actual reader mystery so the end result has a slightly different feel to it. Still enjoyed it, and if that one unresolved thread leads into a sequel I will buy it with vigor.

great continuation of the Larsson series, taking us back to our friends from those books and movies. I found this book well written and enjoyable.
