There's much of this book that I have been looking for in a fantasy story, and obviously I want an Obeah now.
Maybe parts of it felt too relevant, maybe I just didn't fully bond to the characters. But something didn't land for me.
There are themes to this that are clever though, and the characters do feel real. Just coming from a side of humanity I don't like to look at.

The first 20% of this book felt a little slow while it was world building but picked up soon after

Wow! I’m so so glad I read this book.
What a fun universe, with a super diverse group of characters from race & LGBTQIA status to socio economic standing.
Really enjoyed the plot. Action scenes definitely lack description & the authors writing was a bit strange at times (using characters names like 40 times in 2 sentences)
But really enjoyed being immersed.

It is an enjoyable and progressive story with several twists and turns toward the end. The overall plot took nearly half the book before you got to the hook of the story and started going to the conclusion. It's more effort than I would normally put into a book, and I didn't understand some of the concepts of magic surrounding the Fae home and why they couldn't simply leave. The romance was kinda cute, if a little pushed together and formal interaction between couples.

I'd say the majority of the story happened in the last 25% of the book. The narrator for the audiobook was too slow, and I had to put it at 1.5 speed to get through it and even had to retrace my steps a few times.

DNF. Did look forward to this one, but I just did not get pulled into the world and story. 150 pages in and nothing major has happened even though the story has only ~400 pages. I was not sure it'll turn around and be good enough to finish in the remaining amount of pages

A STRONG 4.25*!!...To be fair, I 1: JUST started reading again after many years of not reading, so I feel like a brand new reader again, like I'm back in my teens. 2: this is my first fantasy book (like, EVER...literally in life), so I have no context or previous experience with this genre to base my opinions off of. You know what I mean?? Like, I didn't grow up listening to mariachi. So if I randomly hear mariachi, I couldn't tell you if it's good mariachi. I can only tell you if I liked it because it made me do a little two-step or bounce a shoulder or something. Ya know?? & 3: I had been puffing or sipping throughout the majority of my reading experience with this book, so that probably influenced my enjoyment of it. Lol! Idk, but I DID enjoy it!
But anyway, Chiillileee!! Ok, for this to be my first ever fantasy read, I'm definitely not disappointed. It was so good! I actually want to read more fantasy and I did NOT expect that.
Since I'm typically only interested in "urban" romance dramas, family dramas, or thrillers, this book was a test for me to try something new and outside of my comfort zone, and I'm glad I did!

***{This whole paragraph has 'light' spoilers! The next ones do not'***
I thought Rayan and Lettle's love story was beautiful. Furi and Yeeran's felt rushed though. One day Furi still hates her and then suddenly there's mutual sexual tension, they smash, and now they're in love! Idk. Neither one felt like the types to fall in love like that, especially given the start of their relationship.

As far as the plot, a lot of it was a little predictable, but I still got hit with a couple of whammies. Lol! I did feel like there were too many twists and turns thrown in at the end, but I chose to just read it like a movie at that point (since that's how a lot of big reveals happen in movies). I do think the book should've been a little longer in order to hash all of that out a little smoother.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book--especially from like 60-the 90% mark. That portion of the book almost made it a 5* read for me. That is the portion I puffed the most while reading, though-to be fair. Still, I'm looking forward to the next
installment.

I wanted to love this. It had all the elements I want from a story. But the pacing was really off. There were moments of intrigue but it was fleeting and few, and mostly it was sadly boring. The execution of the story was not successful and I struggled to relate. It's a shame.

It is refreshing to have the main characters be in their late twenties & early thirties. I also really enjoyed how the fluidity of gender and sexuality was treated with normalcy.

Something that bugged me from the beginning, which I think may have been made worse by the narrator (audiobook reader) was the very stilted dialogue. The dialogue often felt robotic and unnatural to how people would actually speak. I also got slightly annoyed at the end by how long it took the characters to come to conclusions that were so obvious. This felt like YA level writing with adult content, which is why my rating is 3 stars.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this and am excited to see how the plot develops in the next book.
