Two dimensional characters making dumb and unprompted decisions (if any) and the plot got lost somewhere in the first 100 pages. That's a nope from me.

Turning the chosen one trope inside out, The Fate of the Fallen features Aaslo, a forester who would generally prefer not to have much to do with people in general. But with the world at stake, this band of misfits and outcasts--who have no business handling the fate of existence--find that they are the only ones available to step up and face the darkness hanging over them. Full of gods and magic and gripping adventure, Kel Kade's opening to the new series is in turns dark and fun, ridiculous and epic. The strength of its characters and the truly unexpected turns of the narrative more than carry a few rough patches in delivery. For readers of fantasy, there is much here that is familiar. But in Kade's capable hands, it is transformed into a truly remarkable start to a story that I expect will only keep getting better. The misadventures of this group doing everything they can to preserve all they know surprised and delighted me. It's big and fantastic, but at the center, it also has a great deal of humanity and heart. I'm excited to tag along for the ride.

2022 reread. Audio this time. (The audiobook is a delight.)

I still love this book. A dark fantasy world populated by ridiculous characters who have no business bearing the responsibility they do--but they're the only ones willing, so let the adventure begin.

All I’ll say it’s it’s fun, clever, and exciting. You gotta go into this book blind, but I’d still recommend it!

I’m not sure how I feel about this book. I was completely surprised by the twist in the first few chapters.  What kept me reading was the banter.

However, there was so much I didn’t enjoy. The talking  head got old, I felt at times that pays off the stuff we’re missing as we shifted from one view to the next, and (yes I’m aware that there’s a sequel), the end didn’t connect to the beginning very well. We don’t know who was speaking and how it connects to Aaslo.

I’m torn because I want to know what happens but don’t know that I want to read the next book.

This was not what I was expecting especially after the “hero” is killed and his best friend chops his head off. Then goes on an adventure to tell the king Matthias is dead all the while the decapitated head talks to Aaslo.

This was a great “the chosen one is dead now what” book! I LOVED the main character, Aaslo ❤️
Parts of this were kinda slow for me and I didn’t really care for the “gods” parts, but the last quarter of the book was amazing and action packed! I definitely want to read the next book.
