This is a lovely little book with well crafted characters in an established world. I got a little impatient with the narrative for a bit in the beginning but Kade picked up the pace and covered a ton of ground in this first novel all while twisting the usual fantasy tropes. Book sich as this are usually epic in scale and page length but this novel is only 300+ pages which is nice! I’m looking forward to the next one in the series.

Audiobook for this was phenomenal! I liked this book but didn't love it, I look forward to continuing this series tho b/c it was an interesting concept!

This was pretty good. I enjoyed most of it. It felt laggy a little bit in the middle but very solid ending. I don't know that i'll read the rest of the series but it's by no means a bad book.

This book was a fun adventure! I absolutely love the dialogue/banter between the characters. I love how the chosen one trope is used, but flipped on his head!

Feels a lot like Tolkein meets any hero story. I like Mathias and his changes throughout the book. I like that Aaslo is his own worst critic and still becomes someone to root for.

DNF. The writing is appallingly bad. I cannot believe this was a Book of the Month option. The writing is so incredibly poor that I struggled to get through the first chapter.

“His eyes were the dark, rich green of an ancient forest hiding epic mysteries.”

This is an actual line from the first page of chapter one. “Epic” mysteries? What.

The dialogue was amateur and awkward. The troubled conversation between one of the MCs and his would-be significant other was cartoonish:

““What are you talking about?” Aaslo said as his heart attempted to tear its way out of his chest, and his blood heated beyond comfort.”

I have never read a fantasy. Like ever! I was never a fan of the cliche story line and the mid evil settings. When this came up on book of the month I decided "why not?" And oh boy this was AMAZING!

What I liked - The narrator was amazing. I used the audio book to help me while reading when it came to some of the weird names, and I found myself not wanting to read it with out the narrator. I love the world building Kel did and the map included in the front of the book was super helpful.  I also loved the incorporation of the Gods/Goddesses. It was a nice little break from the main story and I love the reaper girl (I forgot her name, but will update when I get home).

What I didn't like -  The ending. I don't know if it's common for fantasy books to end on a major cliff hanger, but it's not fair. I just wish I could have the sequel right now.

Overall I can't wait for this series to be fully out and I am grateful this was my first Fantasy novel.

What if the chosen one fails? The whole book was based on the idea that the chosen one fails in their mission right out of the gate. The poor guy quite literally loses his head within hours of beginning his grand hero's journey. His best friend decides to take up the banner and continue the quest in his friend's name. The only problem? Of the millions, and I do mean millions, of prophetic lines that could come about from this quest...only one, the one where the Chosen One lives, is the one where they win. This was that thread. I loved the story and how Aaslo refused to believe that they were cursed, even though the High Sorceress herself told him so. The person who was in charge of everyone else. It was a great read and I'm looking forward to the next volume.
