For Josh and Sophie, life is going pretty well. Sure, they're in San Francisco working while their parents are away, but things aren't so bad. Josh works in a bookstore and Sophie works in the coffee house across the street. Then Josh's boss is attacked by a man named Dr. John Dee, and both are dragged into the mess of Nick and Perry Fleming, or Nicholas and Pernella Flamel.

Josh and Sophie must learn how to defend themselves and each other to survive in the dangerous situation they find themselves. And they have to retrieve the Book from Dee - Nick and Perry will die without it.

The storyline is entertaining, but the story is a little stilted and the dialogue seems a little forced. This series was popular when it came out and it is a good recommendation for those looking for fantasy overlapping with reality.

Plot has lots of holes, but the plot in general is VERY good!

Unfortunately, this book was not for me. I didn't really connect with the writing, the plot, or the characters. Mostly I was bored.

My favorite part of the book was the note at the end talking about the actual history of Flamel and the other historical characters in the book.

It took a while for me to become invested in the characters. By the time I did, the story really picked up the pace. It is a great story and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

pretty good. very easy read, though quite repetitive at times in saying things in reference to the twin's unspoken bond and how they know what the other is thinking. and constantly calling Nicholas Flamel and Perenelle Flamel by their full names throughout the book got a tad annoying but is was a decent read and had enough going on in it to keep me reading, will be continuing with the series.

recommend for anyone who likes magic & secrecy, not too deep of a book, quite light and engrossing enough.
