I never do this, but I only read half of this book. I couldn't get through it.... while the ideas were original I found the characters stale and annoying, the dialogue cheesy, and just all of it not particularly well written. I'm aware that it's a book aimed more at young adults and children, but I've read many that are well-written, even if they seem young. I just don't have any desire to finish this; it didn't hold my attention, which is a shame because the cover is gorgeous and I always like discovering a new series.
Honestly, I'm confused about how I feel while reading this book. It started okay for me...but there are parts when I was totally lost about the turn of events. It has a good plot, a lot of interesting characters which I would have like to know better but was somehow disregarded. I don't know if I would read the second book, maybe I'll give it a shot. After all, I was not displeased by what I've read. I just want more and maybe the next book in the series might change my unconvinced mind.
This is my go-to book for kids who come in looking for a great new series. You may remember that Nicholas Flamel was the creator of the Sorcerer's Stone in the first Harry Potter book. This series follows the life of two teenage twins who meet Flamel and his wife and are taken on a whirlwind adventure battling the creatures and beings of mythology. This book has everything and is sure to entertain even the most reluctant of readers.
so disappointed. this book was terrible, to say the least.
Audiobook: A good, sometimes great narrator tells a typical and uncompelling modern day fantasy story. It might be fun for the crowd it targets, but sadly those days are passed for me.
Listened to the audiobook version of this book in the car with the kids. It's entertaining, but not my favorite. Also, the end really doesn't resolve much and my daughter, who had listened to the next two, says the entire series just continues on and on and there really is no conclusion at the end of each book.

I really enjoyed this book, though fantasy is not my preferred genre, I loved the history infused in this novel and the realism the two young characters brought to the table. Scott writes really well; The Alchemyst held my interest and even made me laugh out loud a couple of times.
Fun, quick, good book. I haven't read a young adult book in a long time. Looking forward to the other books in this series.
