Good adventure, lots of suspense. Knowledge of various mythologies/legends helpful in understanding. Will most likely read at least one more in the series.

A well-due nostalgia reread. Truly, there are so few young adult fantasy novelists who pull off intricate and enrapturing world building as well as Michael Scott does. I may actually be tempted to buy the whole series this time around rather than leaving the one book I own all alone.

FINAL RATING: 5

3.5 stars. Likely would have been much less critical if I had read this around ages 12-15, the age group I would guess it was written for. Fun concept, but juvenile characters who annoyed me - I know all teenaged boys don't be too smart but did Josh really have to be SUCH a dumbass? - and unnecessary explanations of clearly implied emotions...buuuut it's really a kid's book so I can't fault it too much there.

Definitely more like 3.5 stars. I really liked the world in which the story is set, I like how all the characters, expect the twins, are based on real people or legends. The story itself is really intriguing, I really want to continue with the series!

But the first book also had some flaws. For example I really disliked what happend to one of the goddess in the middle of the book, it was just too easy and I also found the hints at the character developement of Josh very obvious.
But I can't wait to get to the next book!
