Okay so some final thoughts
1. I wish they would JUST TALK. Maybe this is me being in a long term relationship but I JUST WANT THEM TO TALK!
2. Some of this felt very repetitive and back and forth like for the entire book
3. The ending felt a bit rushed once Alaric returned home
4. Alaric literally can't trust anyone đ
5. I did enjoy Talasyns power move!!
6. ALSO HIM CALLING HER THE WORD FOR STAR!?
7. I hated how often Talasyn was referred to as being SLIM. It felt like it was happening at every opportunity

Despite the word war being in the title, this was more a book about political maneuvering and a study in âkeep your enemies close.â But in this case the enemies are forced to marry, and in the endless wars of words and negotiations, they also fight against the idea that maybe there is more to the enemy at hand than they would like to acknowledge. Because confronting the idea that they might have something in common with each other is absolutely the worst.
The slow burning dance between hate and maybe-something-thatâs-not-hate that happens between Alaric and Talasyn is one of the best examples of simmering tension that I have read in a long time. They are fundamentally at odds, on opposite sides of a war and both steadfast in their knowledge that they are on the side of right. Even though both are at the whims of others that hold the strings of power. Their sparring only highlights the notion that when you live with one version of events, that version is the only one that makes sense to be true. Everything else is a lie. Right?
Woven in the strands of this story of magic and war and wrangling for power is a cautionary tale of how easy it can be to hold onto the notion that there is only one right way to do things. And that you never truly know the whole story, especially as itâs being written by someone else and isnât over yet.
I canât wait for this world to continue. For Alaric and Talaysin to continue to grow into themselves, and maybe finally see that there can be many ways to end a war, and not just the one path you were put on by others and told to follow.

this was such a huge undertaking and it was mostly successful. however, the true power of the story was def lost in translation. the plot and characters are less compelling, the stakes lower, the world-building not as expansive. this book reads like the second in a series and i think it would have really benefited the author to flesh out the world in a first novel. wonât be continuing this series, but i enjoy the authorâs writing, and will read when she releases something new!
