Don’t really know what to think about this book. The story was good but there didn’t really happen much for me. I didn’t really connect with the characters, so I probably won’t be reading the other parts.
Im gonna continue with the series. It was a cute read but nothing really WOW happened
Reread May 2021
I read this back in 2016 and I devoured it. While my rating has changed, I still have to admit that I couldn’t put the book down. There was something page turning about reading about West and Maggie’s relationship. I could have lived without all of the slut shaming and a few of the things West did, but I still enjoyed it after all.
_______
I thought that the tone of this book was more serious than the other Abbi Glines books that I have read. On that note it was quite refreshing for me, I thought it was a really good change of pace.
The main characters are Maggie and West. Maggie moves to Alabama with her aunt and uncle and her cousin Brady after terrible circumstances. It’s because of those circumstances that she hasn’t talked in two years. West is hiding a secret that his dad is dying from everyone he knows. He meets Maggie and decides to confide in her since she doesn’t speak. She ends up speaking, but only to West. They form a relationship that gave them what they both needed the most, a friend who understood and someone to talk to. It further formed into a romance.
I liked the relationship between the two characters. I just didn’t like the way West treated other girls. He was aware that he used them to ease his hurt and pain but it seems like he never felt bad about it. He only cared about what Maggie thought about him doing it.
I felt like we were watching the characters grow through the progress of the book. Both had so much they were going through. I hope she writes another book with these two characters.

Wasn't a fan of the girl on girl hate -- literally there were no girl friendships or nice girls (apart from Maggie)
The MCs had a bit of an unhealthy attachment to one another but it was still fairly sweet; though West was very possessive and it was quite cliché.
I know this will appeal to many, but it just wasn't for me.

J’ai trouvé que l’histoire allait un peu vite, j’aurais aimé que Maggie prenne plus son temps. L’histoire d’amour est super cute et j’ai bien aimé la fin !

The fact that this wasn't a Wattpad book before it was published genuinely, GENUINELY, shocked me. Because it is written like a really bad one. This was painful, to say the least. Little synopsis (I don't remember a whole lot so bear with me): Maggie’s witness? Her parents die and so she becomes mute due to trauma. It happens, makes sense. She moves into her cousin's and his parent's house. The MMC is the cousin's best friend, he is an ass to everyone cause his daddy is dying. It's an okay concept. It's fine. The execution was horrendous, however. When I say I had a genuine fear that the FMC and her cousin were gonna fuck I-..... It was rough. And I am sad to say that wasn't the worst of it. The FMC and the MMC create this “bond” within what feels like two seconds, and then all of a sudden she feels comfortable and safe enough to speak to him after being mute for years…. Yeah. Not only was she good with talking to him after knowing each other for like a week but she was also apparently good with talking to his mum and dad upon their first meeting. It was very clearly not a single drop of research about selective mutism was made. And of course the old, the characters were very 2 dimensional, they had no personality, and none of the characters were likeable let alone redeemable, and because of that, I do not remember anything that really happened in this book.
This book was exactly what I wanted and more. I loved reading from Maggie's perspective. She's so strong, and even though she didn't talk in the beginning, reading from her point of view, she was funny and witty. This book deals with some heavy things, mixed in with the fun things, and not so fun drama, of high school. It was a wonderful mix of both. These characters grew so much and I loved every minute of it. Can't wait for the next one!
