This is a much better story, to my mind, than Christie's previously published one (which I just reviewed--Death Comes As The End). Interestingly, it is a reworking of a short story called "Yellow Iris," published in 1939, four years previously. Happily, for Christie fans, she took the same basic story: girl dies of cyanide poisoning at a party for her birthday in a high-end restaurant and one year later there is a re-enactment--and kept many of the basic details, but she changed the murderer and the solver. The short story was a Poirot story; this one features Colonel Race (now a Major), but Race is not really the one who solves the puzzle. Entertaining.

Enjoyable characters, lots of intrigue, and 2 murder mysteries to solve. I do so love when Christie has a male and female protagonist with lots of spirit.
Honestly just a very straightforward but enjoyable mystery. I don’t know how Christie does it because the book is built in such a way that would be really boring in many other author’s hands. The first few chapters are spend going over watch of the “suspects” and the people around them one by one. Suspects for a murder that happened a year before the book, that of the beautiful Rosemary. Then we go back and forth between characters—their thoughts, their hopes, their goals—until the second murder (Rosemary’s husband). Then we follow the detectives as they just sit with these people and have conversations with them about those two nights. There is no action, no huge twist out of nowhere. Just, characters talking. Everyone has a motive! Everyone could have done it! Twice! Cheating husbands and jealous secretaries and impoverish sisters and betrayed wives annd more! And it was nice! I read it in the audiobook format, read by Hugh Fraser (Hastings in the Poirot TV show with David Suchet) and I expect that added to the experience.
Well rats, hate when my favorite character is the murderer

The magic of the book lays on the characters, an odd characteristic in Christie's work. The Farraday were my favorites, but everyone is amazing. And the case was on point, very well executed with surprising plot twists. This is the type of story I would recommend to anyone who hasn't read the author yet. Clever and engaging.

A story prompted by events during Christie's lifetime.

Rosemary Barton drinks poisoned champagne at her birthday dinner - a year later, the six witnesses reunite at the same table of the same restaurant to remember her…
This was a solid murder mystery: a good puzzle with a clever solution. But the denouement hinged on an element that ultimately felt a little dissatisfying (though not unbelievable). Christie was also a little heavy-handed (by her standards) on the misdirection and character set-ups.
A solid, closed circle double murder mystery - clever, though not Christie’s most masterly.
