This is the first Agatha Christie book I have read and I enjoyed it way more than I was expecting. It starts a bit slow but then is a real page turner

Another good one. I like Colonel Race, but he's not as fun as Poirot. It was a good mystery though. I didn't guess the end but I had fun trying.

I really enjoyed this book. As with all Agatha Christie books, you have to be on the lookout for sexism and racism, both of which are present in this book. The racism isn't quite as pervasive as in other books; it's mainly the one-time use of a slur to refer to a Hispanic/Latino man. The sexism is...well, it's not horrible but it is there.

I really appreciated the twists and turns in this story. I was able to figure out some aspects of the solution but the overall solution wasn't something I guessed. More crucially, I can see how there were hints of the solution along the way, so I don't feel like it was entirely something I couldn't have guessed. There were a couple of moments where I gasped aloud too, so it was very engrossing.

i thought the first chapter was a gorgeous piece of set-up, a little self-embodied craft manual, for establishing situations. after that, fun, throws up a great succession of red herrings, so you’re guessing and theorising, but never quite there (at least i wasn’t. which is how i like it.)
