A detailed dissection of cancer that reads with ease.

Emperor of All Maladies explores cancer through historic, cultural, scientific and personal lenses to create a full and fascinating portrait.

Written with a light and incisive prose, this beast of a book becomes a breeze to read.

There were a few chapters st the end when the scientific minutiae became a bit too much for me.

But for the most part, I couldn’t put it down.

It was a little more "basic science" then clinical than I expected and also very very very long. But overall I liked. Good writing.

Records of cancer in ancient Egypt? Disturbing history of surgical oncology? The advent of epidemiological studies? Sign me up! Learned so much from this book. Got a little lost in the last 100 pages when it gets into the weeds of oncogenes but I think I got the gist.

This is a biography of cancer. The author provides an extensive, and fascinating, history of the disease, the various treatments -- from bloodletting to targeted treatments based on the human and cancer genomes (and how they came to be), and interesting case studies. While it was depressing to read about the early hit-and-miss approaches to treating cancer, I left the book feeling hopeful about the future of cancer treatment.

Inutile dire che questo libro è stato un parto. A tratti noioso e tratti avvincente. L'ho iniziato a leggere solo perché mi è stato caldamente consigliato e perché dall'anteprima dei primi capitoli sembrava tutt'altro libro, ma si è poi rilevato essere un insieme di fatti storici e punti di vista dell'autore.
