Thought it would be more immersive…………. also I thought the Nightmare would be the love interest. My bad.

Honestly the Nightmare taking over Elspeth actually made her a more interesting character. Waited the entire book to care about Elspeth and Ravyn. I love Elm and Ione though. I feel like they have more depth in their limited interactions with the main characters.

THATS HOW IT ENDS BRUH THE CLIFF HANGER IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS THANK GOODNESS I HAVE THE NEXT BOOK ON HAND. ok but phenomenal book i was hooked the whole time i love ravyn with my whole soul AH and ravyn and elspeth together love love love them, this whole book was so well written love the idea of the spirit of the wood and the whole backstory with the shepard king creating the 12 providence cards and how those cards are each different and have different magic and love that nothing is for free wihh th magic cuz it makes sense. elspeths whole journey was gorg, confused on ione and what she wants but like go crazy, the nightmare/shepard king that was in her head love the concept of that and omg it ending with him taking over i’m so excited for what all is going to happen in the next one, like of course he’s the one to find the missing twin adlers card, ok like yeah some parts of it were predictable but you know i still ate it up like saw it coming that he was the king the first time there was the idea there. i feel like elspeth is gonna be back in the next book and probs like separated from the nightmare after they bring all the cards together or whatever

Wow. I loved this book. The magic system is so incredibly unique and fun. I found the plot, setting and characters to be engaging and interesting. There was something going on nonstop and I wanted to keep turning the pages. A few things felt a little obvious to me in terms of Elspeth and her magic journey. Also the storyline with her and Ione left me wanting.

Overall, fantastic book. I’m going straight into book 2. I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.

I was really engaged in the story, and the magic system was unique. I find I enjoy fantasy books more when I go in blind, and I had no idea what to expect with this. I didn't even read the book description, I just trusted booktok reviews. Definitely a romantic fantasy, there is romance but it's not the main plot.
Excited to read the second book.
