Gave me much to think about. I love how Edith Wharton writes her characters and presents to us their thoughts. They feel so human with all their complexities and contradictions.
The beginning did drag a bit for me at Bellomont and we are introduced to so many characters and relations at once that it was hard to keep up (I guess that tracks for high society in the early 1900s lol).

Pretty good. I definitely understand Lily's sense of always looking for something, but never being sure of what it is and, thus, not finding it. It's a bit sad. One of those no-wait-if-only-she-would-have-done-this-instead books.

The language was beautiful but I just couldn't get into the plotline. The book just dragged on, with one bad decision after the other, culminating in a fairly expected ending. Maybe there is something about US literature or period dramas that I just cannot relate to/do not really care about.

a wonderful book with an amazing heroine, and poignant commentary about high society.
