This was an easy summer read. The story was pretty engaging, but I had problems with much of the character development and some of them felt pretty false/contrived. Especially, unfortunately, the female characters. The parts I enjoyed were centered around Hendrick, the 6 year old autistic son of the central characters. And I liked the surprising interactions revolving around fiberglass sea creatures. It didn't ring true to me, but some of the misadventures along the way were entertaining.

I thought this book was charming in a lot of ways. the ending was... appropriate? but not exactly what I was looking for.

Felt like marking it DNF around page 100, but felt that there MUST be some revelation before the end. Nope.

Someone out there told me this book was funny. It's good, but not what I would call funny. So now I am just mad because I can't remember who told me that because I want to ask them what the hell they were smoking. Was it you?

This was actually a pretty good book. It was an impulse grab at the library, but completely worth it. Every character is flawed, which is nice. Only the kid is completely innocent and it was interesting to see him learning Spanish. I wanted to kick the wife throughout the story. Every time she had some dialogue, I wanted to kick her. I think that was the point, though. The main character was compelling, and I agree that a mini-golf course or racetrack in the back yard would be wonderful. Mini-golf is endlessly fun. I think kids should be required to play mini-golf. It helps teach important topics like geometry, physics and philosophy. The philosophy because life is not fair and life is hard, just like the par 4. I tilt at the windmills that block my obscenely bright-hued ball.

I picked this because of the cover. I liked the idea for the story and most of the characters, especially Butner and Hen, but I found the author's writing a bit confusing in places. I found myself reading parts again, not because I loved the beauty of the language but because I'd gotten lost in the action. For instance, several times I thought, "Wait, how did they get here? Weren't they just (in the kitchen or in the yard) a second ago?"

Overall, it wasn't bad. It was just a different way of constructing sentences and writing than I'm used to reading.

REALLY liked it. Easy to get lost. Enjoyed perspective of a male character.
