I wanted The Guest to be so much more than it is.

Emma Cline’s writing is wonderful — quick, sultry, and so so atmospheric. I felt like I was summering on the East Coast by page two. What gets me about this book is that nothing happens, nothing. The last page, the last word, is the start of the thing you’ve been waiting for this whole time! I can appreciate a good, unsatisfying ending but this just felt confusing. I read almost 300 pages to not find out what happens?
Does Dom the drug dealer come and find her and hurt Simon?
or
does Simon see her and take her back?
or
is she just making all of this up?
or
is Jack alive or hurting himself?
I guess I just don’t understand the point here. Where is the story? Is the story just about a girl who wanders the beaches of New Jersey for a week? I’m so lost.

A delectable train wreck that I could not put down. Gobsmacked at the sheer audacity of protagonist Alex and the way she both floats and jackhammers through life.

Captivating in a stressful way! Alex, the protagonist in this book, is our modern day messy disaster that we strangely root for. Moreso to find some relief to the cringey and terrible positions she puts herself in. Looking forward to reading more of Cline’s books!

engaging, eery, and reminiscent of the unnerving quality of grotesque wealth associated with american summers and vacations. i understand the ending, but it was a little disappointing, especially with the build up throughout. i have a theory that dom was not even a real person, since we only ever get his communication through phone and the details of alex and him are murky. lots of pleasant unveilings to consider in this feat from cline.

reading this book feels like you are in a drug filled haze alongside alex and you will leave this novel a little more unmoored from reality than when you started it; in a fantastically brilliant literary way
