gave me an identity crisis but otherwise very very good :)
“I wonder – if nobody is listening to my voice, am I making any sound at all?”
wow. kat has not been lying.
i loved this book. for me, radio silence feels so incredibly gen z (ik AO is technically a millennial but lets ignore that). the struggles are so real and relatable to me, but not in a dumb shallow way. RS is about finding your voice in this digital age, in a "universe city" connected by the internet where everyone has a platform but some are still not heard. its not about romantic love between the two MCs but love in a deeper sense and pure platonic friendship, which is something you dont typically see in YA.
on to the lgbtq+ representation. i saw someone tweet and i quote "there are two types of gays, gays for the gays, and gays for the straights". radio silence is about gays for the gays. not the comic relief side character that only appears when the MCs were doing something else
it blows my mind that AO was only 21 and at uni when she wrote this book, its so beautifully written, and (im saying it again but) has that gen z aesthetic: the rebellious, Romantic with a capital R, authentic feeling. AO is a literal genius.

Despite getting off to a rocky start with this book (I was worried it had big “I’m not like other girls” energy) I ended up vibing with it in the end. Although at times I was frustrated with Aled’s lack of communication, I also understand that he was dealing with a lot of stuff. I think this talks about something very important: that not everyone is destined to go to nor needs to attend university to live successful or happy lives. It’s a false narrative that ultimately pushes some kids into a place they simply won’t find happiness. It gave me a lot of the teenage feels, which was fun. Not all YA manages to accomplish that!
Frances Janvier is a studious girl who spends her free time making fan art of her favorite podcast, Universe City. When Frances gets a message from the creator, known to all only as Radio Silence, her life changes and with that comes new challenges and risks. With a new friend at her side, will Frances be able to overcome these obstacles?
This book was just so wonderful in so many ways. The main characters are interesting, complex and relatable in so many ways. Figuring out your identity, sexuality and future are all struggles that I can personally relate to. The character interactions were really cute and genuine and fun and heartbreaking at times as well. The teenagers feel well done and not a cheap imitation or stereotype of what adults think teenagers are like. The podcast element is cool too. I’ve only gotten into podcasts in the last couple years, but I thought that Universe City sounds cool and would make a cool podcast for real.
Only thing I didn’t like really is that it’s written in first person, but that’s a minor gripe and something that I can get over.
Definitely recommend this book. It’s heart warming with relevant themes and a good story. What’s not to recommend?

"Hello... i hope somebody is listening"
This book was massively beautiful, sad, sometimes disturbing and extraordinary.
Alice Oseman is absolutely brilliant, just brilliant.

Hello.
I hope somebody is listening.
.
