Not my favorite AO work - I didn't connect with the characters as much as I wanted to. The transcripts of Universe City didn't really seem to fit for me. I liked the Frances-Aled relationship and how it was chill that they never got together. A lot of it felt kind of disjointed to me but overall it was an enjoyable read.

This is such a love letter to 2012 tumblr and I absolutely adore that!
The super star study girl wanting to get into her university of choice  and doing everything to get in was very cool to read about but somewhat repetitive at some point. I do like that her ability to get good grades suffers towards the end of the book!
Altho the main character, Frances, is black I will say that she doesn’t really feel that way (coming from a black woman who is also very much a meme loving art kid who studied a lot) she has very little ties to her culture and how it influences her behavior- she’s feels like a character that is written like a white person painted black (acknowledging that black ppl are not a monolith) I’m not sure how to explain  that she just doesn’t engage with anything regarding Ethiopian culture, language, or art. Like if she never mentioned that she was Ethiopian, I would have assumed that she’s just some tan white girl with curly hair.
Besides that I’m a bit irritated that she doesn’t really try to connect to her school friends all that much, she allows herself to just think that they wouldn’t accept her true self yet has never been challenged on that front.
Outside all of that- I think this book is really sweet and I absolutely adored that they hit on platonic love that isn’t just “we’re friends” as someone who has had queer platonic relationships- this book does a good job at different types of relationship types that a lot of queer books seem to gloss over.
I did want Frances and Aled to get into a queer platonic relationship but it’s okay that doesn’t happen bc they seemed close as is <3
Aled and Cary mom fucking sucks and I love the showing of losing autonomy- the fight at the end felt a bit too… easy?
Anyways pretty decent book, would recommend simply on the mention of welcome to night vale alone <3
