A *significant* improvement over volume 2 of this series. Though, after having just read all four volumes of Batgirl, I'm wondering when she had the time for these BoP adventures...

When I saw Gail Simone’s name on the cover I thought they finally got some talent on this book, but unfortunately Simone only wrote Batgirl Annual #1, which was the highlight of this book. The remainder was all Swiercznski & his story isn’t getting any better.

Not digging the fact Black Canary can’t control her “Canary Cry”. It seems really lame, or it being tied to her husband just isn’t being explained very well at all. I was disappointed to see Katana leave the group, but this Talon character Strix seems very similar to the Cassandra Caine version of Batgirl. Another new character was introduced named Condor (& only male character on the team). I’m hoping the new creative team in the next volume do something more with him cause I’m kind of ambivalent about him now. The whole Starling is a spy for Amanda Waller angle is getting old too.

Still not as good as the original BoP, but it's getting me back.

The New 52 Birds of Prey is suffering from a major identity crisis. The old version was a fun team up book with characters that complimented each other well. It just doesn't work without someone filling the role vacated by Oracle. Why did they feel the need to put Barbara back in a cape? It's unnecessary. Also, I hate Canary's stupid 90's costume.

We talk about this flawed run and the Birds of Prey in general on a special episode of the All the Books Show: https://soundcloud.com/allthebooks/episode-234-birds-of-prey

Solid story telling and art. A solid resolution to Katana's time with the team.

I'm now just working through the New 52 version of Birds of Prey and it has been my first foray with this team. I really enjoyed the first two volumes and the third did not disappoint. The Birds of Prey's current team is made up of Black Canary, Batgirl, Starling, and Katana but it seems ever-changing with a stint by Poison Ivy and new faces this issue. Volume 3 of this saga collects Batgirl Annual #1 and issues #13-17 of Birds of Prey.

I had previously read the Batgirl Annual but it was a good refresher for coming events within Birds of Prey and setting up Batgirl's connection with the Talon, Strix. I really enjoyed Catgirl's appearance in the annual. Her ruthlessness as well as her strange moral sensibilities were on full display. She's such an intriguing character and I have no idea why I haven't read any of her own comics before.

The Birds of Prey, still recovering from their last experience with Poison Ivy, immediately come up against another foe. Katana's past comes back to haunt her as the Dagger Clan is plotting a major play and Condor becomes wrapped up in the middle of it. Black Canary on the other hand is trying to keep her powers in check as her Canary Cry spirals out of control while Batgirl introduces an even more volatile member to the mix.

There was a lot happening with the Birds of Prey in this volume but Swierczynski does an excellent job of managing each member's storylines and maneuvering new pieces into play. I love the constantly shifting makeup of this team which allows me to get to know some unfamiliar faces in the DC universe. Plus I love the interaction between characters that a team provides and the new faces should provide some interesting storylines going forward. The art by Molenaar is fantastic throughout these comics capturing the fight sequences perfectly.
